We'll keep trying for instate recruits, but it'll take more than one good year to get more guys in the top 20.
Nope, not true, never been true, never gonna be true.

Unfortunately the truth requires sitting in the uncomfortable reality: we're failing, that doesn't mean we're always going to fail, and we need to work hard to try to not fail in the future, without any assurances that just trying hard means we'll succeed.

College sports message boards are addicted to the notion that the future is knowable and inevitable. It's not. If you've been here long enough you should know it's not.

Look, prove that we are competing in the big ten west, maybe even play in a big ten championship game (or win one?) and recruiting will slowly change. As long as Michigan, OSU, Alabama and Georgia can see their kids fill up the first round, it’s gonna be tough. This is as close as we’ve been in 20 years so dump the pessimism, so I’m saying we have a shot. (Per dum and dummer)

It's amazing how you can read a post different from the 1st time...Pvaughn8 is a valid fan...stop the silliness...
I'll defend Pvaughn8, it is ok to be negative 9just don't over do it ;) ). Let the staff prove his paranoia wrong.

(I guess I am frustrated with media **cough DFW media** acting to much like mouthpieces for owners and teams **cough Mark Cuban**)

Haven't been in the thread for awhile. I guess I see less negativity and more disappointment. Count me among that number.

But I definitely remain very optimistic.

I will say that in the NIL era, getting a commitment is sometimes more complicated than in the past. Perhaps that is a factor in not closing after a visit.

Or from another way of looking at it it's much more simple.

Illinois Football is hard. We have great people at the helm with a smart, well thought-out plan, but it's really hard.

This is the last season of college football as we've known it. We've got the roster and schedule to succeed and show up to the new reality with a competence and stability that hasn't been present in 30 years. It's frustrating to have this tail risk of recruiting circling the drain being a part of that, but this is the business we've chosen.

I'm not sure if you understood what I mean.

A kid shows up on Friday for a visit lasting through Sunday. Along the way, he gets a meeting with Illinois NIL folks who tell him what they are willing to arrange for him. That arrangement is going to involve a contract.

Presumably, the kid and mom and dad are going to want to take a longer look than is available between coffee pours at the Original.

I mean I get it, but those same dynamics exist with a pre-NIL commitment.

You also have to get your social media edits ready and all of that these days.

I'm not worried about the pace of commitments (yet), I was just more commenting on the more general lack of traction, especially in-state.

No they didn't exist. There was one letter of intent for all schools. Same deal terms everywhere.

Count me as very encouraged by last years results and having at least 3 guys drafted in the 1st two rounds of the draft. But, I can also be very disappointed in only 1 signing so far. I will judge the class at the end but so far it is concerning. Was hoping guys would hop onboard. Especially in the secondary.

I'll assume the early announcements of McCullom and John official visits are by design (and the additional visit from Tuerk recently). This staff is going to do whatever it takes to bring in improved talent along the defensive line.

247 Rankings for Each:

McCullom - 721
John - 626
Tuerk - 451
