If you're curious what the mood of the board was when DGL announced he was coming, here's a link. Insiders down to lurkers were pretty excited. Remarkable how now we've got some almost trying to push him out the door. I'm not sure I've ever seen a commitment go so sour. Usually we just get wildly over optimistic prognostication. With this one we have a bunch of people throwing shade and already insinuating that he made a bad decision coming here.

I think that's a little disingenuous. Most posters here simply realize giving major minutes to an unproven frosh PG isn't a winning formula. Hell, Clark and Epps were higher rated coming out of HS and both struggled to adjust to the college game (Epps mostly on defense). Posters are also a little jaded over the transfer portal and jumping to conclusions that DGL is already looking to transfer given his (possible) lack of playing time. It's called tempering expectations. I think by and large, we're excited to have DGL on the team. We're just not expecting much this upcoming season.

Okay then, I didn't see Ty take a single jump shot all year, not even in the paint. He can't shoot. Simple as that.

Agreed. He proved he can find ways to score but him adding an elbow or fade away jumper while posting a guy up will be valuable this year. His FT form also needs to improve as he is a banger and will get fouled while grabbing a rebound.

In 1978-79 another guy could not shoot as his points came from posting and put backs. Ervin Johnson made himself a better shooter and he did quite well for himself. LOL. Let’s see what TY looks like in August.

As much as I like Hawk, him staying in the draft and getting drafted is a good thing. We have a lot of talent coming back and in that we could absorb his absence. It will give more time for Hansberry, Ty and whoever the big that is sitting in the weeds waiting for his spot to open up via the portal. I would love TJ to return as long as he can play within himself and not play hero ball. We really need to have an offense that flows with multiple options instead of dribbling then helter skelter as the shot clock drains. Driving, passing and shooting is what we sorely missed last year. Correct that and we are FF material.

Ty can score but to act like defenses won't sag off of him or that our spacing will be as good as when a shooter is out there. Having 2 or more shooters on the floor at a time will improve our teams offense. Ty can help in other areas but I don't expect shooting or creating spacing is one of them. He can certainly drive the ball and benefit from improve shooting by some of the new comers and Goode.

I agree. I was excited about Acewolf, Curbelo, Sky, and Epps. I don't want to be hurt again. I had a girlfriend in high school who I knew was about to break up with me one time..... so I avoided her for a whole week and asked out her best friend. It's kinda like that.

I don’t recall Kofi taking many (if any) jump shots and he was a fairly good brick mason as well. Yet, he managed to score some points. I know, I know Kofi is a giant and Ty is not. However, Ty showed he is pretty good close to the basket and has shown the ability to get there. And, he was just a freshman. I don’t think it unreallistic to expect improvement in his skills.

Agree - you couldn’t play 5 TYs on offense last year. I’m just saying he can fit with what you’re doing and not be some 4 v 5. Up to Brad to figure out those lineups and matchups that maximize everyone’s ability.

This discussion around Ty is nuts. Last week he was going to average a double-double and lead the team in assists. Now he’s our largest offensive liability?

Does he need a jumper? Not really. Would a midrange jumper be helpful? Yes. Will Ty be able to space the floor next year? Signs point to no, but that doesn’t mean he isn’t working on it.

Will he be able to create his own scoring opportunities through hustling and being a menace? Absolutely. And that has been Ty’s role so far in his young Illini career, and he’s damn good at it, too. Some might even say elite.
