Guys ranked #19 get to start as freshmen. Guys ranked #126 generally do not.
And Andrew Booth, DB, was a 5-Star, number 14 player in the country as a senior in 2019 and Devon Weatherspoon not ranked. Maybe putting numbers and stars a side, someone can objectively give their opinion.

FYI, looking back, we were not interested in Ulis, due to his small stature, until the big dogs started showing interest. He wasn’t #19 as a sophomore or junior..

He said they “generally” don’t start. I don’t think providing an exception disproves that.

The trouble with Ty is that he's no threat to score. You don't actually have to guard him. Even though they may be young, I think we'll be happy with Gibbs-Lawhorn and Moretti at pg, esp. after they get half a dozen games under their belt. More than anything else, we need shooters.

In conference play last year, Ty had a 1.124ppp offensive efficiency (20th in B10), a 56.2% 2pt shooting percentage (14th in B10), a 13.2% Offensive rebounding percentage (3rd in B10), and a 2.0% Steal percentage (24th in B10). From January 31st on he averaged 5.4ppg, 5.4rpg, 1.2apg, and 1.2spg, with 10 of those 12 games against Tier 1 and Tier 2 competition as a true freshman. All of this points to a likely big jump for him next year as he is a world-class offensive rebounder and very efficient in close meaning he will have ample opportunities for easy baskets and points, especially with a sophomore frame and strength vs. freshman frame and strength, and a year to improve on his post moves.

But hey, even if you don't believe the numbers, there is a guy in conference who also isn't much of a shooter in Trayce Jackson Davis. He can score buckets without a jumper or three ball. Now I'm not saying Ty is TJD, just that you can still be very productive and efficient at scoring the ball in college without a jumper if you can make up for it with high end other parts of your game. If Ty adds some post moves to his bag next year, he's going to put up a highly efficient over 10ppg in conference with his elite rebounding ability.

Ranking has absolutely no influence on the work ethic, heart, and perseverance that DGL...or any player....possesses. We all should know by his film that he has skills and athleticism to do the job. But categorically stating that any Illini player with his skills will see only a few minutes on the floor is foolish. Likely, he needs a lot of work on defense, but if he wants to contribute and work hard enough, he will do just that....most likely from the bench. Yet we have seen enough proof in college hoops that anything is possible. Glad we have both DGL and Moretti....the latter of whom will need to elevate his skills considerably if he is to see the floor in the next couple of years.

Someone here thinks Ty is no threat to score, and I find that hilarious.
Agree. Ty has shown me a quickness and confidence to score within 7 ft of the rim at any time in a number of unpredictable ways. He will need to be able to shoot the 3 ball if he is to ever suit up in the NBA, but he can also be an Illini legend just by doing what he does so well now. He needs to get help on his shooting and work hard at it but his scoring is pretty solid.

If he has as much perseverance as you suggest, then a little setback like not playing many minutes as a freshman won't deter him from sticking around.

He isn’t going to play unless we’re up or down by a lot of points.

Did you see him take a single jump shot all year? I didn't. And at the FT line, he's a true brick mason. Do Illini fans ever pay attention?

I honestly can't believe there are people who still think DGL and Moretti are gonna contribute this year...
Why? Over the years we've had several freshman pgs who were outstanding from the get-go. It's not that unusual.

Not sure who gets the minutes this year but this forum pretty well wrote off Harris as a contributor and ranked Skyy way above Epps. Not taking predictions on this years frosh to the bank. Hansberry will be tough to keep off the floor and DGL is very quick so he can play defense if he decides to.
