I think Brad realized by end of season our strength was defense found our death lineup

Rogers, Harris, Hawkins, TSJ and RJ

Dain is much more mobile than Kofi and with another off season to get into shape I would like to get rid of drop coverage and have Dain leave the lane if necessary. Luke works very hard on defense. Limited on athleticism but has good size.

I think we have added some athletic defenders - Hansberry 6'8" , Harmon 6'4" and Domask 6'6"

Our defense was shredded by NW, Iowa, Penn State and Indiana because MM, Skyy and Jayden could not or would not make the effort on defense.

I have no problem pounding ball inside to Dain every play . He is a good passer and it will open up the outside. Good ball movement instead of hero ball at the top of the key will create more shots. No more contested 3 pointers with lots of time left on shot clock. Workign for open 3 pointers is will significantly improve our 3 point shooting %

Can't wait till next season. Additon by subtraction.

Agreed…and if this hoops thing doesn’t pan out for him. He’s got the right look for old- timey jazz guitar.

Me too. I believe we are already going to be a better rebounding team. I think the kid from Oregon will give us more physicality down low too.

@Indy Illini Fan looks like Boswell is sharing PG and back court if he stays at Arizona

When Penny didn’t lock it down … I knew he was AZ bound … Think I posted it a while back ? Not for sure …

Boswell is in an interesting spot … Someone would really have to step up with NIL and he won’t even touch the portal without a deal lined up …

Portillos fries are the gold standard. Del Taco fries are excellent as well. Love me some crinkle cuts.
Portillo's are definitely good, but a lot of obvious cost-cutting measures and various bad decisions lately (new and vastly inferior croissant supplier, menu changes, etc,) under the new ownership has made quality very inconsistent in my experience.

We have begun eating at Buona more often as a result, and their fries (while not crinkle cut) put current Portillo's to shame.

Sad to hear Portillo's quality has gone down. Inevitable I suppose since Dick is no longer the owner. Still wish we had it in CO.

Ok, this might be kind of long, or…. It might not be. Here we go.

As I watch this Ty discussion I am struck by a couple of things. One, I think MOST people see Ty’s value and also recognize that some things could be better, mainly shooting. Two, some people must just be anti Ty…….in order to be so dismissive of his offensive game.

I have coached and won ALOT of basketball games over the last 27 years. Both genders, from JH to College. I was always a “feel” coach or a by the gut kind of philosophy. As I watch Ty, within the construct of our team, I often thought, “Just put Ty in the game.” But, like a lot of people I would be concerned about the “lack of offense”, but, my gut told me that we just played better when he was in. Especially towards the end of the year.

I am also a stat geek and these new analytics, while not a hallmark of my coaching career, are really interesting and they validate my gut. We were better when Ty was on the floor.

So I used conference games, because by that point Ty was getting his feet wet and becoming more of a fixture. So here is the “facts”.

— Ty was our 2nd best shooter by %. Dain at 59 and Ty at 56.
Problems with this? Not much. It is a smaller sample size, and he was not lighting it up with jumpers, but he made 56% of the shots he took. Instead of complaining about his shooting percentage, praise him for shooting shots he could make.
— Per 40 minutes stat: Ty averaged 9 pts, 10.4 rebs, 2 assists, 1.4 Stls and 1.5 TOS.
The 10.4 rebs led the team.
— The per 100 possessions stat is one that I find way more interesting. As a coach, if I see that a guy gets “x amount” per every 100 possessions, i may want to try and give him as many possessions as possible. In essence, who is doing the most with the time they are given. What does Ty do for every 100 possessions he is on the floor? 13.4 points and 15.4 rebounds. Once again the rebounds leads the team. He is also 5th in assts, and 3rd in steals.
— But here is the kicker especially for the “his offense sucks“ crowd……. He has the second best Off Rtg on the team behind…. Luke Goode. Which that is a whole other deep dive that shows just how good Goode was when he came back. WE MISSED HIM. That ORtg means that the team was more efficient when he was on the floor. Then here is the kicker, Ty’s usage was 12.6%. 10th on the team, yet his production as it relates to the team was 1st. For perspective, Terrence usage was 27.2 and Mayer was 25.7.

So I think the stats say that the “If he develops a jump shot…. He gone” crowd is way more accurate then the “he will get buried on the depth chart“ people. Also, this crazy notion that he is 19 and now cannot learn to shoot is asinine. Shooting is muscle memory and confidence. If you see enough of them go in while shooting the right way, you will improve.

I am glad we are not playing against Ty.
Awesome write up
