It depends what the Cardinals mindset is for the future. If they want to tear it down I have no problem trading Goldy. Fans also need to realize if we trade Goldy and bring up Walker/Winn next season full time for example they will have growing pains just like this season with the guys we already have.Problem is, Cardinals don’t have much to trade in expiring contracts. Montgomery would give them a couple mid-tier prospects - see for example the Syndergaard trade last year. Nobody else on an expiring contract will net anything worthwhile and certainly nothing sure to contribute next year.
Goldschmidt is the main asset the Cardinals have that would net a major asset that could contribute as soon as next year. You’d look at trading Goldschmidt for a young starting pitcher with 4+ years of control and then sign a FA 1B like Rhys Hoskins for less than Goldschmidt was scheduled to make.
