Rim protection on defense, certainly (Hawkins brings a lot of that despite wing-ier parts of his game), and having a focal point down low also draws defenders away from your shooters around the arc.

The best offense we have played under BU was the period when Curbelo was out in 2021-22 and it was just four shooters around Kofi a la the Dwight Howard and Stan Van Gundy Magic. No one could stop it.

Dainja's threat brought some of that this year. Those players are hard to find, my concern is we aren't even trying and don't seem to value that skillset.
We’ve had Kofi, we have Dain, and though not completely same skill set Morez is an interior big. So not sure how you get BU doesn’t value that skill set. He also brought in Perrin — again not completely same skill set, but I think he had some of that in his game. As fans I think we seem to forget it is not as simple as snapping ones fingers to get players like that here. Especially in the I want to play now/NIL era.

As for next year, I’m not too worried. We have Dain. I think with a real PG, we’ll see Hawk flashing into the post more too. Hawk had to spend too much time up top running the offense last year. I think the NBA feedback might also include them wanting to see that skill as well as improved outside shooting. QC also has it in his game to flash to the post too. Mayer didn’t seem to want to do that too much, though he had some success when doing it. I wouldn’t be surprised if some of the plays that weren’t run last year included that, but MM preferred to hang around outside cuz he had no confidence he would get the ball in the right spot if at all without a PG.

As for going forward, it seems like BU reached out (according to Twitter) to plenty of bigs this off season. It wasn’t a priority though with Dain and hopefully Hawk back. And the bigs in the portal could likely see that too. With what we lost in off season and how we played this past year, guard/wings was a more pressing need. Only so many roster spots.

I was not a big MM fan as I hated his defense (let his man get past him and try to block the shot from behind).
However he was pretty good at scoring in the lane or at least drawing the foul.

I agree that Coleman needs to use his size to score more inside. He does not need to post up but he should be able to float in the lane and hit short jumpers / baby hook etc. Coleman outside shooting is not good enough for him to play only outside.

Dain is a better passer than Kofi. He just needs to make quicker decisions when the double team comes.

JMO - I would rather have Coleman back because he has been at Illinois three years, it is great to have continuity, and I want him to have blowout senior season 16 ppg, 8 rbg, 5 apg, 2 bpg leading us to a B10 title and week 2 of NCAAs. Glad to have portal transfers but they seem like mercenaries coming for only 1 year.

If he leaves uncommitted … I’ll be a little surprised … It may not get out publicly and he may take another visit to make it look like a real recruitment but he’ll tell the staff he’s in …

He’s got 2 other visits booked … Talked to a member of one of those staffs … Let’s just say they weren’t happy we have him on campus right now …
Thanks as always for the info. This is why this site is best for correct information with guys like you Illini4040 and others.

Yeah man, this stuff frustrates me honestly to see how peeps take obvious pay site and bring it here to free.
The thing is it’s hard to identify what is truly coming from the pay site. Obviously this site has its own set of insiders who report things before Piper sometimes and have expansive connections to the college basketball scene as well as Illinois. So proving where the data comes from is difficult when it could be two people getting information from the same source or different sources who happen to be privy to the same info.

A veteran PG completely opens up the offense. Passing, screening, spacing will give our shooters open looks. If we get everyone back, we are a FF contender. We will be the deepest team in the conference where we can play 11 guys with very little drop off.

To be as unbiased and neutral as possible. CoHawk could greatly benefit from another year in college and would collect some good NIL while doing so. Not climbing any draft boards (falling in a few). Most mock drafts don’t even consider legit foreign talent either.

With Dennis, TSJ, and CoHawk back… this team would be off to the races 👀

Three years at UCLA and really couldn't become a major contributor plus had his off the court issues. What coulda been
I can’t help but think that most of these big recruits we wanted badly that go elsewhere usually don’t pan out at the other school. Jalen Brunson obviously made the right choice, Juwan Evans I remember had a nice year, EJ Liddell. Who else?

Tennessee freshman Julian Phillips in the portal. Former 5-star. Looks like he’s from Missouri (hopefully Miznoz doesn’t get him).

I do see that DePaul was the third school to offer him back when TA was there wonder if we have any sort of in there.
The way I understand it currently is he entered the portal just to have another option IF he decides to withdraw from the draft, but his intention is to stay in.

FWIW he’s a weird prospect. Has the size and athleticism but the mental aspect and motor are questionable. He’s like a late teens to mid second round prospect, which is a huge range.

I pay for WaPo and the failing NYT. Obviously, there are ethical limits on sharing articles. However, I don't consider what I read there to be some kind of secret, member only, premium information. It's not like they own the news.

If a fan has the extra time and pocket change; there are plenty of reasons to subscribe to pay sites. I don't see access to privileged info being one of them. If I can't share it; I don't even want to know it. That is why I know longer subscribe.
