That would be two coaches ago (Weber). Which, according to you, isn’t even “multiple” coaches ago.
It was almost two decades ago. We went to the Sweet 16 four times since 1990. That's 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005. We've been to the NCAA Tournament 4 times in the last four years after a complete rebuild of a program. During that stretch, we've had two conference championships, which should have been three of Warren didn't fall over Michigan.

We were in an 8 year drought to even make the tournament prior to BU.

Some of us do recognize the "glory years" of the 80's. I'd venture to say, not many.

Given our history, he'll be on the hot seat for what exactly? Making us a perennial tournament team?

p.s....this is not directed at you, but the group.

Thats interesting because it would tell me there is something he needs to develop that coming here won't help get it done. Somehow Utah can help him more than our staff?
This is about him being an alpha on a team not necessarily developing a certain skilll, etc. He would not be the primary piece on our Illini roster.

Exactly … Idk why everyone is freaking out when RayJ was gonna back up DGL anyways …

Because they are looking for 6-1 shooting guards?
It might be that the NBA is looking for him to show additional skills/aptitude that he won’t be able to show as readily if he’s playing strictly PG in college. Doesn’t necessarily mean the NBA wants him as 6-1 SG. Heck NBA isn’t particularly looking for 6-1 point guards either. Bigger is better. But if they feel that on average a 6-1 PG has to exhibit certain skills to succeed in NBA and some of those skills are less likely to be shown in the college game while playing PG, then I could see them telling him time at SG in college would be beneficial.

You could take this one of two ways.....

1. The feedback was that he wouldn't develop as well at Illinois, so best to look elsewhere. Very concerning if this is the case
2. His draft position is better if he is "the man" and not the second or third option. In which case giving up $250k in NIL this year is chump change.

Not sure I buy the second scenario - it's not like other schools haven't had multiple kids drafted in a particular year, so there would not seem to be any real need for RayJ to have to show he is the man. My nagging suspicion is he didn't really want to go to Illinois to begin with
Yeah, #1 seems like a death blow to a program.

I don't think that this lost recruitment (if it is lost), wouldn't have been such a big deal if it wasn't a player at our most desperate position of need. Last year, without a true PG, it was a struggle and that's being kind. It cost us in many times, late in games. Now, of both TSJ and CH come back, it's much less critical because we're not looking for a scorer, rather a distributor, a game manager and a guy who can score. If only one comes back, it becomes a much bigger problem and if neither comes back it's going to be a real tough year.

development knock:

sounds like pure BS to me. Did Trent and Ayo develop? ok, those guys were multi-year players. how 'bout Plummer? yeah, he was good at Utah, but he was better at Illinois.

This is just an incorrect take. If any NBA exec was telling him to not come to Illinois it is because they knew he would be the 3rd option at best.
