Once again, two things can be true at once. 2022 was a successful year for the program except for March. 2021 was a better season overall. Coupled with the falloff in 2023, it's trending in a direction we don't want to be heading in unless this season is a correction.
We are at 1 bad, which is extremely relative, season. It's June 2nd. We don't even know if the roster is done yet. A second season like 2023, I'll worry. A season like 2022, and with it a conference title, not so much.

There's no world where 2022 can be viewed as anything other than a resounding success for the program. You're really going to sit here and complain because it didn't match the level of one of the greatest seasons in program history?

My god. Conference titles, in the day and age of unbalanced schedules, signify less than they used to.

The 2021 team was significantly (SIGNIFICANTLY) better than the 2022 team. The difference in the 2021 and 2022 team was essentially equivalent to the difference between the 2022 team and the 2019 team that went 12-21, if you believe in efficiency stats.

Reeves averaged 1 assist last year. If that’s the starting PG next year, that’s not ideal. It’s still a really talented team, but still no true PG unless DGL surprises us. Reeves is a good 3 point shooter though.

I'm not picking sides here, but it is conceivable (maybe even likely) that the coaching staff also saw red flags but that his talent and our need won out over red flags they did see.
There is also a spin cycle. Coaches are going to promote their kids. A point guard from Europe has elite skills. He just needs to be Fletched. He is making amazing progress.

Unless we need his ride. Then he's not B1G material.

If you wanna say we lost to a team with less talent; and we probably shouldn’t of…that I understand at least.
no, splains why we were better 3&4 years ago than the last 2 years. We're not a blue blood (yet)

REEVES IS NOT A POINT GUARD.

We need a starting pg. Insiders.. Is Jaelen House from New Mexico a real option?

Disagree. Personally, it would take the team getting to the Elite 8 w/o a reg season title to equal a season in which we win the BT reg season title but progress only one or two games in the tourney.

We all have our utility curves. Yours differs from mine and I'm not gonna judge you for that. Winning the conference over a 20 game slate is one he!! of an accomplishment, much more so, IMHO, than finishing in the top 5 in the BT and getting to the Sweet 16.

'Cause I'm an old-fashioned guy who sees (and values) the character required to best competition consistently over a long period.

But that's just me. I'm cursed with a long attention span. YMMV.

This is new territory with so much talent. The pg by committee might actually work if everyone buys in. There’s also enough defensive prowess to erase some offensive miscues so there is hope. At the very least, we’d get a lot of national attention with this lineup. All eyes would be on what Underwood can do with the talent.

So if we had a slightly worse 2021, say we went 14-6 and tied for second, and had our exact same 2022 where we went 15-5, you all would chill the f out because the trend was better? 2021 was one of the best seasons in program history. 2022 was a really great season. Both were wildly successful.

Yeah it is. I thought Williams waiver was rumored to be denied tho?
I don't think so. He never actually played last season; so it is likely to be approved.

In the case of Woodbury, the rule is fairly clear is that the injury must be season ending. When they used him in March for two games in the conference tournament, they effectively burnt his medical redshirt.

HE CAN DEFINTELY SHOOT. quickness leaves a lot to be desired. we can be dogs on defense, he cannot.
He is a better athlete than your giving him credit for. I watched him make some very explosive athletic plays dunking the ball. People said someone that left wasn't athletic either but he vertical jumped 39.5. I would freaking be estatic if we had that athletic shooter at pg.

Chuck Nuggets

Dip your nuggets in my staff source sauce.
If you have 5th year Reeves and TSJ on your team, you can make a final 4. Especially with how good our front court might be. No matter what the pg situation looks like
I guarantee you can't. No point guard, no tournament success. If it turns out one of Williams, DGL, or Moretti can be a stable point guard this year, then okay. Right now there's still a gaping hole and a hope. Maybe Rodgers takes a big leap.

As others have alluded to, I would be surprised if his waiver was denied since he didn’t play a single game at Iowa State. If it is, though, or if he’s just not healthy, I think Harmon starts instead. Unless we want to start Ty and sort of have a point guard by committee approach.

We had a train wreck of team chemistry last season, no PG, no guy at any time running the offense who saw fit to run the plays our HC called with any material consistency, and basically started a true frosh at point for the entire season. And yet... we finished the BT one game out of sharing second place and 1-1/2 games removed from occupying second place alone.

This is what I was getting at yesterday with my post about the team having an aura of wanting to gell. Did they gell? We know they didn’t. But they seemed CLOSE to gelling if not for that one last puzzle piece that would kept the guys in their regular organic game roles and with a true floor leader running the show. And which would have dialed back the season's drama factor on and off the court.

Like looking at a nice puzzle that lacks one big piece in the middle and seeing that opening every day driving you crazy. But still, not a bad season for a train-wreck looking from that angle.

This is a little bit of an exaggeration. Of course 2021 team was a better team (they got a 1 seed for a reason), but to back that season (w/o Ayo) with a B1G Regular Season Championship in 2022, is a complete success for the program. The lack of NCAA Tournament success will be the lone downside of these two seasons. Through that lens, both of these teams were a disappointment, and therefore, I cannot say that 2021 was significantly better than 2022, as they ended in the same result in tourney (2nd round exits...one more disappointing than the other). However, I will look back at both of these seasons with nothing but smiles for what was achieved, and some sighs about what could have been.

Last year, on the other hand, was an utter disappointment (probably more so due to the preseason hype from this board and the Las Vegas tournament).

He shot 40% from threes- I don’t want him passing the ball! Agree he isn’t the PG

I actually think Ty can be the point-forward and initiate the offense- it would be a good role for him and having an entire offseason to prepare, he will be very good at it

A big part of the issue last year was Skyy leaving mid- season and the staff and players having to adjust on the fly with limited practices- really hard to do

I’m less worried about having a traditional PG if the team is together all offseason - Brad and staff can figure it out

Is Buie at all interested now that Audige isn’t returning to NW? He sometimes shoots too much, but he also knows how to distribute the ball and get to the hoop which would unlock the team’s ceiling.

Quote du Jour - Coleman Hawkns

“The reasoning behind going back is just feeling more comfortable with the start of my NBA journey,” Hawkins told ESPN. “I would have been a draft pick, but regarding the contracts, two-way deals -- nothing is guaranteed with those. Having another year of school would allow me to have a better start to my NBA career, hopefully getting a first-round, guaranteed contract.”

“NBA teams say they want me to be more aggressive,” Hawkins said. “Teams have mentioned confidence. Playing with amnesia. Forgetting about missed shots and just play my game. I am an elite shooter, but I didn't show that last year, so being more consistent with that will be important.”

This is one serious young man with his mind going in the right direction. Dedicated and mature. Big goals to achieve. Willing to acknowledge his shortcomings.

His leadership of The Beloved on and off the floor is going to be joy and a revelation for the roundball world. We around these parts already know about that. But the Nation as whole is going to know the name of this young man. And he going to take this to another level.

Giving off Ayo and Trent vibes with his love for the game and his gratitude for where he is.
