It's an obvious statement that nothing is a sure thing, but even if a coach told Josh they'd take the Illinois job, I feel like there's still a 50% chance it doesn't happen. Coaches/recruits say the things that leave doors open for them and often when the rubber hits the road, the minefield appears. And of course random curveballs can come up.

Maybe I feel that because I just watched succession and every plan in that show backfires.

Wow , the snarkyness on this board the last 2-3 weeks is at an all time high level , JMHO................How about we rachet that level down to a more manageable level of honest opinion swapping instead of the threatening doom and gloom anger being tossed around...........................We all expect it during the off season , but this year it seems to have blossomed into a fever pitch " I'm right and you are wrong " confrontation that is trying to turn this board into a less than enjoyable way to spend the day.....

It shouldn't be a competition to out top the other guy , as that other guy USUALLY is a Fighting Illini fan , just like MOST here.....But , as usual , there has been an influx of rebel rouser's coming here to stir the pot , metaphorically speaking.........

And I can live with that ---- as long as he's playing the 4. And I'll add that I'm expecting big things from Ty during the upcoming season, but not at the PG position. I believe he'll be a top 5 contributor.

In thinking through all of the options on our current roster, I'd have to bet on S. Harris right now (today) as our starting PG in the first secret scrimmage this coming fall. Less than ideal, yes true. (But I'm not expecting Williams to be granted eligibility for the 2023-34 season.)

The only explanation that makes sense to me on BU's ending the PG search is if Ty and DGL are just slaying it in practice while playing the point. It seems to be a risky strategy, but I really hope it works out the way he sees it.

I have an office-mate for the first time in several months and it took all I could muster to keep from blurting out in laughter.
Unrelated - I hope RayJ is a gentleman. My nieces went to school with him and I asked that they punch him in the face, should they ever get the opportunity.

Look at all the players that left. Assistant coaches that left. Some of y’all been willing to chalk each one up to some excuse that victimizes the Illini and Brad. I give him credit for getting quality replacements, but how much is that Brad and how much is that the treasurer who signs the check?

These excuses have all been parroted here:
Ortega - Calapari needed him

Gentry - he’s going home
Mark Smith (87) - didn’t like the treadmill
Tevian Jones (116) - weed problems
Alan Griffin (182) - dad wanted him to stay but he listened to mom (what kinda kid is not going to listen to his NBA coach dad? Please)
Adam Miller (33) - wanted to stay but mom didn’t want him to
Andre Curbello (47) - concusion and addiction led to attitude issues
Austin Hutcherson - better than Ayo, but injury bug
RJ Melendez (94) - no more Puerto Ricans on the team, and good riddance
Brandin Podziemski (107) - defense kept him off the court (lol no need to rehash)
Sky Clark (33) - in it for himself
Jayden Epps (72) - not a team player
Zacharie Perrin (222) - thought he was going to start

Underwood has recruited 26 freshman - 17 have transferred. He’s had 3 coaches leave for lateral moves in 7 years.

Some thing is broken within the program, and its clear fat stacks and bags are only thing keeping it together at this point in my opinion.

How many or these kids/coaches were more successful after they left the university of Illinois? 1/2?

Question for our insiders if we were to break from Brad - beyond the Sean discussion, would you be confident in getting a coach that we’d all be excited about on day 1 without a bunch of question marks?

What type of tier of coaches would we be playing in?

Way less than ideal. I love Sencire's intensity, but I've seen nothing out of him showing that he can run an offense. Not to mention the bad FT shooting.

Supposedly Muss, idk why he’d leave Arkansas for us though. I want to have faith we’d hire the right guy but let’s not forget who hired Lovie Smith

BU could theoretically hire a bench coach that doesn't recruit off campus to do that. Or move GA into a practice coach role, creating an opening for an off campus recruiting assistant..

New rules supposedly allow for 2 skill development assistants that can apparently do pretty much everything except recruit off campus? I dunno if that is 2 more or 1 more. I suspect the latter. Anyone know what Zach Hamer does?

Hot and controversial take here, but I actually think the Lovie Smith hire ended up being a smart move and net win for us. Beckman turned our program into a national laughingstock and ran us into the ground while also leaving us with several lawsuits. While Lovie was not successful on the field, him just taking the position did return some respectability to our program and allow for someone like Bielema to accept a coaching position here. Plus Lovie actually did leave some decent players when he left. So while it certainly can't be said Lovie was successful here, I think it actually was a good hire for us in the end because it wound up getting us Bret and in a way turned our program around. Sort of.

Is one of the resons we can't get a point guard is because he would most likely be the 4th or 5th option on offense? Baylor is always a guard emphasized offense controlled by the point guard.

I hope he doesn't consider "convincing kids to come to IL" a waste of time. That's kind of his job, isn't it?

Granted, if he feels there is zero chance, I understand, but geez. At this point, it's worth some effort. It feels a little like he's not trying that hard right now.

Also - I am a fan of Brad but I also have criticized him when necessary … He deserves credit for getting TJ and Coleman back … He also deserves criticism for how the entire rest of this off-season has gone …

I agree with you but do think Domask will be huge in improving our team morale and ball movement offensively. I am majorly concerned at point, but do think we will be way more cohesive this year. Mayer was fun to watch but the epitome of inconsistent and maddening from effort standpoint.
