Nebraska 20, Illinois 7 Postgame

With the exception of the Toledo game, the defense has been above average to quite good. But the offense can’t sustain drives and the defense is on the field for well over half the game and are gassed at crunch time.
Not so crazy about our D...the Nebraska game was the least given points for the season at 20.......Purdue 44, Kansas 34, Florida Atlantic 23...not a great stat.

@illini0440.....any updates on the 1:00AM coaches meeting?
As frustrated as we all are….the coaching staff is even more frustrated. I can assure you that some of your theories on here are hilarious. Bret didn’t forget how to coach(he’s leading the same team meetings he did last year talking about the same stuff about being smart football players and situational football), Bart isn’t doing anything different(coaching/teaching wise) than he did the past 2 years. You can tell kids/show kids what to do and how to do it until you’re blue in the face and sometimes it just doesn’t matter. Walters, Patterson and Kane weren’t god last year. We had 7 NFL guys on the roster last year that were all veteran college guys. Sydney knew every play that was coming at us last year. Made sure everyone was lined up correctly it really was impressive. But back to the meeting….very intense and emotional, self reflection from everyone. They want to figure this out more than anyone. Yes Barry still has a job(for now). Schematic changes were deeply discussed. This team is badly missing senior leadership imo….Sydney, Chase and Palcho ain’t walking through that door. Coaches can lead but player leadership is a helluva lot more effective.,

If there is a silver lining it's that my Saturdays will be free to do other things. I'm not wasting my time on this stupidity. I'm in my 8th decade, seen it too much to expect anything different. If the weather is bad and I'm stuck inside I'll watch. For a while.

I'm handicapped, and it's a real hassle to attend a sporting event. I was going to try to get up there for a game this year. Love to tailgate, grill, listen to some tunes and hang out with folks. Then go to see a well played game, win or lose. Not wasting my time this year, maybe some other time.
Those are my key points too. I have other passions calling in good weather in the fall. While I deeply appreciate Illinois in general, love visiting campus, and really enjoy watching football, I just can’t stomach watching truly bad football week after week. Losing a decently played game is fine, but repeated bumbling clown shows remind me I’m forfeiting beautiful fall days for stomach-churning football. To me it really is more about how we play the game than the W-L outcome.

Season tickets look like a mistake. We gave ours to friends last night, staying home since we’re 100 miles away and the Toledo late night was enough. We’ll share the tickets and enjoy the game in the comfort of our home, right? No, even that was a mistake because we gave up a great night MTB ride for yet another clown show, this one televised live. Lesson: record it, check how we played on here, delete if ugly, watch if reasonably competent. Or just write off the season. Sad.

• Good news: the defense looked better than last week (albeit against a bad offense)
• Bad news: the offense has never looked worse
• Worse news: there are still more games this season
-Good News: If we continue to lose, the Illini will get the #1 draft pick.
-Bad News: We lost to a QB named Heinrich Haarberg.
-Worse News: The majority of the fan base doesn't care any more.

Sounds a lot like last basketball season, is Altmyer gonna go on a Monster binge?

I can understand all this, but the scarier part is when you look forward, our best players will cycle out next year. To me, your post screams lack of talent and/or talent development. How does that improve with best players leaving and the pipeline looking extremely weak.

I get the whole "these guys didn't forget how to coach" mentality. My question is do they know how to recruit? Because this has a....Weber feel to it.

As I’m awake at 2:30 am utterly disgusted by tonight you ask a pertinent question: Why not more plays north/south? Slants, TE etc.
Have had the same thoughts. I know Moore fumbled, but I believe the first throw to a TE came in the last few minutes of the first half.

They've been effective as pass catchers multiple games this year, I don't get it. Give LA easy targets

Also, stop running Love between the tackles repeatedly and throwing swing routes to Feagan.

Paddock isn’t the answer. Luke is the best option we have and I honestly think he has the ability to do the job well. At this point I think he’s getting worse though because he’s thinking too much.

This offensive system sucks, we have a terrible O line and our receivers rarely have separation. What is he supposed to do with those options.

I agree about your Elzy point though!!
+1 on Elzy, I'll be so angry if he bails for greener pastures at the end of the year.

Also, why not line up Wilcher and literally have him run a fly route to clear the d on that side every play? That would give more space and threat than our current approach.

Speed kills, unfortunately it usually is killing us. At this point , why not put you're fastest players out there to stress the defense

I don’t mean to pick on the kid - but I don’t recall ever seeing an FBS center struggle like Kruetz struggled last night. Couldn’t believe my eyes…This Oline is just flat out broken.
Yeah he had a bad game. I don’t think singling him out is fair. That line overall has been terrible all year and ironically before this game Kruetz might have been the most consistent of the bunch.

Sounds like we can't expect Bret to consistently work magic with bottom 5 recruiting at the P5 level. How do we recruit better talent without the prerequisite football success?

I’m sorry, but that performance last night was well beyond a “bad game”; that was utterly inexcusable. You’re probably right that he’s been the most consistent of the bunch, but that in itself is a huge problem! He’s going to be a good player, he’s just too green right now.

Yeah, let's just keep doing what we're doing. It's working so well and the future trajectory is awesome. Illinois football will never recover after 5 more years of Bret's "leadership." Can't wait for those west coast teams to join the conference. Should really improve our results.
This program has never recovered from 30 years ago (some will insist it's been longer than that).

Sorry for recognizing Bret as our best hope of becoming/staying relevant in the past 15+ years, and even that was just Fool's Gold with Zook.

This is a results oriented business. I know it, you know it, and the coaches know it. Every good college team loses players to the NFL every year, this is not new or unexpected.
It is also part of the media's job to set expectations for the fanbase and part of the program's job is to give the media good information to set accurate expectations. If all the "insider's" are predicting 8 wins and the team tanks, credibility goes out the window.
The question isn't if Bret is a good coach. I'm sure they're all good coaches. It is if Bret is a good coach/gm relative to the other P2 coaches. The metrics that matter are wins and losses, or maybe if there were other P2 schools that viewed him as an upgrade.
