Altmyer will start
I would almost never advocate in favor of replacing your season-long starting QB with the backup QB because the starter was injured and the backup came in a played well.

The only scenario I could envision where you must do that is when the backup comes in cold on the final drive, converts a long 4th, and then thows the game-winning TD on a dime with 50 seconds left. And then the following week breaks the record for most passing yards for an Illinois QB at Memorial Stadium, and the second most in Illini history, and throws a walk-off TD in overtime.

Sometimes the circumstances are just too crazy not to compel you to break convention. There’s just no way to send Paddock back to the bench now.

And in a weird way you’re almost protecting Altmyer by doing that. If Altmyer goes back in as starter and struggles even the slightest, the calls to pull him will be deafening. And the worst case scenario would be that Altmyer throws a few picks or can’t get the offense going and gets pulled mid-game. It’s just not a good situation for a young QB who is still developing.

This isn't a case where Luke Altmyer has done anything at all to lose his starting job. He hasn't.

This is a case where John Paddock is hotter than the surface of the sun. He just threw for 500 yards and another winning TD. He looks so good in the pocket right now I cannot imagine a logical coach doing anything other the telling Luke....we have to go with this hot hand right now.

He will understand.

The biggest thing to me in this game is to try to figure out a way to not beat ourselves. For offense, that means don’t give Iowa short fields with turnovers. And unfortunately Luke holds the ball a little too long and is prone to strip sacks.

Paddock gets the ball out. That to me is as big a reason to start him this game as any.

Lots of logic here. Nice way to put it.

I like that we have a fighting chance against a great Iowa Defense and horrendous offense, with the big IF, if we can play with more discipline and fewer momentum killing stupid mistakes. What still baffles me is how Johnny Paddock can hide his red cape, blue tights, and big red S under his regulation uniform.

Not only that, you don't want Luke getting another concussion so soon after getting the first one.
IA is going to get some sacks
But this is why BB gets the big bucks

Iowa is currently shutting out Rutgers 22 - 0. I don't care who starts at QB1 next week. I want to know what Lunney Jr. has in is tool box to score points on Iowa's defense.

I think Coach B will do the smart thing. Hold his cards very close this week, make Iowa prepare for both Luke and John (and Mathew and Mark too if we had them), then give John most of the reps in practice and the starting qb job vs the Hawkeyes. I like Luke, but John just makes our offense so much more explosive with his quick release, ability to find the open man, and accuracy on short, midrange, and long passes. Preparing for two very different styles of play is much tougher (Luke being the better runner), and the Illini need any edge they can get against the best defense we will face this year.

Whoever starts next week at Iowa will likely struggle. Every quarterback does against that defense. Guess the coaches need to decide who will handle it the best.

I haven't watched much of Iowa this year, but I did watch a bit of their game today against what has looked like a solid Rutgers squad.

We'll have our work cut out for us against that defense. And even as comparatively lackluster as Iowa's offense is, we'll need a much better performance by our D than against Indiana.

Sad that we couldn't control our own destiny for the West going into this game, when it feels that could so easily have been the case. Regardless, plenty to play for and, hopefully, we bring our best game in all three phases.

And Isaiah(s), and Ezekiel, and Jeremiah.......
