Illini2010-11

Most amazing to me is that Paddock threw the ball 47 times without a touchdown or interception. Not sure how often that happens, but given the 11 tipped balls, that is quite astounding.

Hopefully the run game picks up next week, as throwing the ball nearly 50 times is not the best recipe to winning.

Maybe a not such a bad outcome. LA starts next week without as much controversy and guides UI to win and bowl game, but also retains his confidence while maturing into next 2 seasons. Has already learned/grown a lot. JP had his moment and rightfully so but it was coming to an end either way. Not like we were going to be playing in a much better bowl game. Only with the help of the gods were we going to win the West.

That was a tough loss to stomach, as we controlled the game until Kasey dropped that pass late on 3rd & 6. Let's focus on the many positives:

- John played well and we had no turnovers
- Penalties were dramatically lower than usual
- Reggie was our only usable back and yet he opened things up by the end of the first half for John to throw.
- Our D was improved

The loss of Feagin was devastating for us. For Iowa the absence of DeJean hurt them, but less so.

Their pass coverage was impressive and defense stifling as expected. And yet it was our game to salt away deep in the 4th quarter on their turf. That's a triumph in itself. I feel badly for the team, as that loss has to hurt.

Let's finish solidly at home against NW and go to a bowl. :illinois:

Still can’t understand even after a timeout why we didn’t challenge the spot.
Was it a clear 1st down? Ib the stands at Kinnick it looked like a 1st down but they marked it short and there was no challenge so we just figured it was marked correctly

I understand the decision to go with Paddock and thought he played well. But late in the game Iowa adjusted to the quick outside passes and just started playing the passing lane rather than rush hard to the QB. There was no excuse to get back to back passes batted down (especially to the same side) with the game on the line. Think that was on both Lunney and Paddock. Just wish Paddock had a little more arm strength. Thought that was exposed a bit today. I kept waiting for Iowa to jump one of the sideline floaters but to Paddock's credit they just never got there and if they did they couldn't stay in bounds.

It really hurts to lose this game but the gnashing of teeth seems strange. This is literally what Iowa has done to everyone all season long. They play tight, low scoring games, that come down to wire. It's what they do and it's why they are so hard to beat unless you have a significant talent advantage.

Basically a more sensible version of what I wrote in my first post.
Exactly, our D played a whale of a game but on that last TD run they were completely gassed.
IA has depth, we don't that's why we lost.

This has been Illinois Sports Saturday at the 1970 John household. Actually it’s weekend. So far:
Illinois MBB defeats Valparaiso
Notre Dame defeats Illinois WBB
Iowa defeats Illinois FB
Illinois VB sweeps Michigan
Illinois MBB vs Southern tomorrow
As I sit at a Texas Roadhouse in Iowa city the VB sweep makes me happy because my daughter who goes to Michigan is at the game and if I have to suffer she does too 😂

So much potential for a great day today. Drove my family 3 1/2 hours to Iowa City, had beautiful weather, great seats, got to see my nephew who attends Iowa, and then we lose the game late in the 4th. Ugh. Long drive home.

I’m absolutely furious about that sh*t punt and return on their go ahead scoring drive. Also, I’m furious about that second swatted ball on our last drive. Are you f’n serious Bar? Everyone knew what was happening let alone 13.

I was at the game tonight and here’s my take.
1.)The Illini played well enough to win but a few key lapses cost them the W. 2.) Isaiah Williams is a machine. He will go down as one of the Illini greats. 3.) Paddock’s play was decent. His indecision to dive forward for the first down at the 5 yard line was costly. 4.) Man I wish C Washington would have hauled in that catch on the last drive. Looked like he had it. Would have been a huge 1st down into Iowa territory. 5.) Iowa fans are beyond delusional. I had a guy after the game telling me the reasons why Iowa will make the CFP. Would have loved to walk out of there with a win to shut up those lost souls known as Hawkeye fans. So close…….so close.

Overall, really solid game. Tough one to lose. Thought Paddock played well but we can put the “magic” to rest now. Didn’t turn it over but could have used Altmyers mobility. Overall, solid game plan on the road against #16 team with tremendous defense. Should have come away with a W.
Are you sure Altmeyer would have completed those passes? I think Paddock’s delivery is much more crisp.

We had so many chances. The paddock safety, the dropped passes, the lazy defensive play on the fumble (because he thought it was incomplete initially), paddock not going for the first down and trying to juke..he did make a smart move getting out of the pile, poor special teams, consecutive poor 2nd and 3rd down runs in crunch time. Better bring it next week

This program needs to take one more step and cross the void currently separating us from a status of competency & respect. There is a realm just outside of our present reach where the Illini go and beat Kirk Ferentz and don’t get outpaced by what Luke Fickell is building in Madison.

It means upgrading personnel in the secondary and assembling an offensive line that gets a certified notary stamp from Bret. When it comes to Aaron Henry…the answer on him is not an emphatic “yes”.

My Goodness will we have any running backs that haven't had surgery?
Jordan Anderson- cut
Josh McCray-cut
Kaden Feagin-cut

Anyone else that I'm missing? Wow, time to hit transfer portal hard. Good luck to all these young men.

Reflecting on the Wisconsin and Iowa losses. We shot ourselves in the foot on both. And reflecting on the Nebraska loss...STOP SCHEDULING GAMES ON FRIDAY NIGHTS. These to me should have been 3 wins. That would reverse 5-6 to 8-3. We are a good team, but find ways to lose. But are teams that find ways to lose good teams? Or just poorly coached? This was another game where just ONE play makes the difference. I'm having trouble understanding how we lost yesterday, and replaying several scenarios in my head. We gave this one away.

Going to be that guy and blame the refs. Four or five mind boggling large errors that game
The PI flag they picked up and the bad IW spot were both especially and clearly bad. Either could easily have changed the outcome. Overall though we played quite well in an engaging and very watchable game. How many teams play Iowa w/o turnovers?

Looking forward to Saturday in Champaign where we’ll watch the win that earns us another bowl game. Then we look forward to sitting at home the following week, watching Iowa get dissected at Indy on national TV.

Luke will get to fully heal and avoid a quick repeat concussion. Paddock will get to finish strong. Everybody will get to practice leading up to our bowl game, at which either QB can start. Feagin will get his surgery. Laughery’s meniscus tear will be fixed. Recruiting annd the transfer portal will draw ever more talent. Everybody can heal as they look back on a great season along the long rebuilding path. Rome wasn’t built in a day.
