Illinois 98, Florida Atlantic 89 Postgame

FGA 3PT FT

FAU 31-64 40% 9-23 (39%) 18-22 (82%)

Illinois 36-57 (63%) 8-20 (4O%) 18-20 (90%)

An impressive offensive peformance.

But it also seems our intensity on defense tend to wear opponents down.

I'll put my hand up as one of the biggest skeptics on this board regarding this team prior to this season. I'm ecstatic to have been proven wrong about how good this group can possibly be. I'm not surprised that Shannon turned in such a performance on this stage, but I could have never imagined that Marcus Domask could perform like this against such a good FAU team. Over the moon about this win.

As far as nitpicking what could improve, it's pretty hard to do that after a 9 point win over essentially a top 10 team. Since plenty are playing that game, I'll give it a try. What jumps out in the stat line to me are 10 assists and 14 turnovers. As the season advances, I'd love to see those numbers improve, which to me would help ensure that we can compete with any team.
The reason our assists were so low was because of the mismatches that we exploited w Terrence and Domask. We let them cook which meant we didn’t need to do as much passing. Had they tried to double either dude, our assist rate would have been much higher.
Our turnover rate in the second half was much much better. First half was rough.

Field of 68 guys just said they think tonight was basically a fluke & aren’t bought in we are the second best team in the B1G. Referenced last years team & how we beat Texas/UCLA flukey… said Coleman was really bad tonight…. Puke.
The funny thing is, the way we got our points tonight and how we played defense is about as replicatable as it gets. Yes Domask and TSJ made buckets, but it was primarily TSJ going downhill and getting layups and Marcus bullying his guy, backing him in, and hitting a 5-8' turnaround. Unless you have big physical defenders on them and the refs decide to hold their whistles and allow for muggings, those are easy baskets. What happened tonight was far from a fluke.

Yep, it's as if they didn't watch the game.

Some people might call it good coaching along with a vision in recruiting. Also a little luck with TJ’ s improvement. He now goes to his right, he is much better with charging calls, and his 3 pt shot as this point seems much better. Makes turnovers but it’s trying to make the great pass and frequently does.

1). Great win. 2). Concerning last year’s two win and then the PSU loss. We had the freshmen and this year’s team is much older. 3). Tn is going to be a different style of game on Saturday. We beat Rutgers, FAU, the Tn game will be like Sweet 16 game. What a game last night.

Some of these takes are laughable.

“FAU was definitely not at their ceiling. Goldin played only ~20 min (and still killed it during those minutes)”. - It’s called foul trouble. Why was Goldin in foul trouble? Going after Goldin aggressively. Give credit to the Illini defense on the big guy.
This wasn't my post, but I wouldn't say FAU was at their ceiling. Unless it's in the macro sense. In that regard, yeah, they kind of are who they are and they probably aren't going to change or develop much from now through March. Vs Illinois, who I think it's fair to say, has not reached their ceiling yet.

But in terms of the game last night, it's not like they were playing out of their minds. And I don't know why it's important for some people to embellish upon last night's win. It was good enough in its own right. It doesn't need your help lol.

Ppg/Fg%/3p/3p%

Season: 84/.58/9/.39
Last night: 89/.48/9/.39

They basically played to their season averages. They're a good team. We were even better.

Great overall game. Last week we saw outstanding defense against Rutgers at the rack. Last night we saw outstanding offense shooting 63% from the field overall, 40% from 3 and an amazing 90% from the foul line. We know what this team is capable of but we also know they can not show up for a half. If they can play with consistency and I am not talking about shooting 60% every night but moving the ball around quickly finding the open man not being afraid to go to the basket, you know this team ball can go far into the tourney. Let's not let this great game fog our eyes on the next opponent. Remember last year they upset UCLA and then TEXAS but lost their mojo by playing "MY BALL" the rest of the year where they were humiliated against Missouri in the Braggin Rights game. Tennessee is tough, they play physical basketball and will be on their home floor. It will be a tough road test in a crazy environment. If the Illini can take care of the ball, shoot a decent % from floor on 3's, get to the basket and make some free throws they could pull off another upset. It would be great if they could find that 3rd scorer to take the pressure off TJS and Domask.
I have been critical of Hawkins during his career at Illinois. He is capable of scoring but one thing I have noticed is he is so hesitant, so undecisive when he gets the ball and by the time he decides to shoot he is not really shooting the ball but merely tossing it up. He needs to get the ball turn and shoot in one motion, quit 2nd guessing your next move and let the game come to you.

Yea I remember last year how high they got on the Illini after those wins. They definitely are feeling burned. They know very little about this team regardless which is pretty disappointing for covering a 4 team event of marquee matchups. Sleeper media on the other hand is jumping on the train!
Gotta love the Sleeper guys!

If y'all want to get fired up, start at 24:16...

We were all wondering if this dude was an FAU beat guy after the Inquirer podcast episode... but this is just on another level in crazy.

Really impressive how much FAU fought. When TSJ hit the deep 3 to put us up by 10 late in the game a few of their players dropped their heads in frustration, but they still played hard.

It's a testament to their coach and players and also a testament to ours as well because we just kept throwing punches back.

Btw, our opening 2nd half defense has been a thing of wonder!! We went on at least a 14-0 run early 2nd half and didn't look back after that. Have done that multiple games this year
Nah, couldn't be true. This doesn't fit the "Underwood doesn't make adjustments" narrative.

Actually they said Wisconsin is the second best team and we MIGHT be the third best team. Goodman is the absolute worst.

What a game, really proud of the team. Could they get it done in crunch time without a “point”? Check. Could they hit their free throws? Double check. Could Domask be that 1B scorer? Check to infinity!
My only concern is the lack of playing time for Dani Dainja. I do see him potentially transferring out

Why is itluck that he improved? Maybe he put in the work to improve.
