Purdue 83, Illinois 78 Postgame

Question for the board. I understand that Hawkins give us the best chance offensively, but should Dain had gotten a more mins? Especially in the early/middle of the 2nd half when Edey was getting going. If nothing else a bigger body to throw at Edey and I would assume he'd help much more on the boards.

I felt the reffing was very even/tilted slight in our favor. Not that it was good, but refs were not the reason we lost
How exactly?!? Lots of loose ball fouls not called on Purdue during scrambles for rebounds, Edey could have had four fouls by halftime easy, at least two out of bounds calls called wrong, phantom fouls called on Harmon, Hawkins, Gurrier. No calls when Ty gets fouled a few different times. Purdue played a lot rougher than the stats sheets showed. Lots of points swung Purdue's way because of those poor calls.

No quit!! Very proud with the fight, could've felt sorry for themselves for TSJ, playing terrible 1st 10 minutes, couldn't make a shot etc.. but they played til the end on the road against #1 and proved this team isn't gonna lay down no matter the circumstances. We will be fine. Imo, we just proved we are a top 10 to 12 (maybe higher?) team in the country no matter who plays.
The only quit was half of Loyalty on the game thread . . . . just sayin'

Totally agree. I can't believe they went to the monitor to review an out-of-bounds possession and came back with a flagrant call against Purdue. That may be one of the least Illinois-things that has happened to us in recent memory.

Dain should have gotten less mins. he's awful. the stretch where he played in the first half is the biggest reason we lost.

Disagree 100%

Foul calls were the same 19 on IL 17 on PU
Edey was in foul trouble throughout the gm
The flagrant call was a break for the illini.

Defense just couldn't get stops and when they did Purdue dominated the boards.

Gotta tip the cap to Kaufman Ren and PU. They were better tonight.
Can't look at the number of fouls... theres way more to it than that... where was the momentum when foul was called? was it actually a foul? etc...

Edey should be in foul trouble EVERY game he plays... similar to how Kofi was...

Flagrant call was correct call. You can't undercut someone going straight up, rule of verticality.

All that being said, yes, tip the cap to Kaufman Ren and PU, they shot the ball lights out in the first half while we were flat, and that was the difference...

The flagrant was much deserved. Guerrier could have broken his wrist. Guy drove back into him after he jumped. Didn’t play the ball. Violated guerrier’s right to his space and verticality. It’s a call we would expect to go against Illinois and we’d be pissed about it. We get a good correct call but are so used to gettting the reverse treatment we don’t even realize a good call when we see it.
The refs bailed out Lance Jones twice within two minutes w absolutely stalwart Illinois defense.

One great thing painter did was have a person pressure Domask brought the ball up to court. At the end of the game he was spent.
When you solely rely on one guy like that for several possessions in a row he’s bound to get pretty exhausted. Noticed it last game too. Props to Domask for handling what he’s being asked to do.

Was thinking the same thing. For sure a dangerous play. I don’t think Jones had malevolent intent. Sometimes guys get undercut. But I didn’t think you could review for a flagrant when a foul wasn’t even called on the play.

But I’m chalking it up as a makeup for last year when Edey elbowed Mayer in the face with no call.

The calls Jones got were huge for Purdue. He shot the FTs and extended leads we were likely to cut into at big moments down the stretch.

I thought we played really hard against a Purdue team that came out with a ton of energy and firing on all cylinders. We didn't give up, Quincy and Marcus both showed out really well. Justin has been really good these past few games and his defense has taken a giant giant step up these past 2 games. Almost night and day difference. Ty had a really rough one today where almost nothing went right for him. There's no doubt in my mind he plays better in the rematch and just attacks Edey and dishes.

Speaking of Edey, we got some beneficial calls on him tonight, which he doesn't normally get called for, but one thing was clear, he does not have the lateral quickness to keep up with Guerrier when he cuts to the hoop. Our next game, I would be shocked if that is not the game plan. Attack him and get it to the slashing Guerrier. Force him to either give up the layup or foul.

Overall, a lot to be positive about in this one. Purdue is a load on the boards. If we can clean that up next time we face them and avoid the second chance 3 point barrage, I think we'll walk out the victor. Lot of heart in this one and effort. Let's go out and beat MSU

THIS for every one saying reffing was "even." Was it better than what we're accustomed to at Mackey? Yeah, but it was FAR from even.

Edey should be fouled out every game he plays, so stop giving refs credit for calling some fouls on him.

Multiple missed out of bounds calls that went to boilers. Multiple foul calls on us where Harmon/Hawkins played 5-star defense.

Ty got murdered multiple times he was in the lane...

Someone else has to be able to bring the ball up the court. Domask is average at it at best, but can’t fault him if he’s being asked to do it. Seems like Hawk should be able to because it’s unlikely his man is going to apply pressure.
