Purdue 83, Illinois 78 Postgame

We didn’t settle for really any bad 3’s. Maybe Goode had too quick of one. I’m super impressed on how selective we’ve been from 3. Biggest turning point for us.
And FREE THROWS! Pumped with Domask showing up against good teams

Love the fight in this group ... Love what Harmon has turned into ... He has found his swagger ...

Domask is an ELITE second option ...

We dug that hole in the beginning and just didn't have enough to get back ... But if you can hold Edey to 10 points and force Loyer and Smith to take tough shots (think they were 5-20?) ... Then I will take my chances every single day of the week ... And hats off to Kaufman ... That kid battled tonight ...

If this is our toughest game until the post season ... Which IMO it is ... We will be just fine ... Especially once we get TJ back ...

I can just here they guys on 247. Well, without a point guard we got close. If we had a point guard! I am sick of it. We are who we are! We don't have TSJ and may never get him back but guess what? WE ARE A VERY VERY GOOD BASKETBALL TEAM!

Great learning game for players and staff. We were not prepared for the intensity of this kind of game at the start IMO. But we didn't give up, which is definitely the hallmark of this team. A few thoughts:

1) Staff has to figure out how to use Ty against teams who decide to sag off of him (which should be every team if they watch our tape). Put the ball in Domask/Harmon/TSJ's (hopefully) hands and play him off the ball for rebounding and D maybe? But he's got to look to score if he can get in the lane.
2) CH has been shooting lights out the last couple weeks. Would like to see him hesitate less and shoot a couple more where he had them. It's a fine line with him though, they have to be good shots.
3) Marcus D is a stud. He was a little tentative in the first half for good reason with Edey defending down low so he missed a few he normally makes. You can see his confidence growing every game.
4) Much better energy and effort in the second half and it showed with a near comeback win.

No reason to be discouraged after this one. The team fought to the end after digging a pretty deep hole. Onward!

Was thinking the same thing. For sure a dangerous play. I don’t think Jones had malevolent intent. Sometimes guys get undercut. But I didn’t think you could review for a flagrant when a foul wasn’t even called on the play.

But I’m chalking it up as a makeup for last year when Edey elbowed Mayer in the face with no call.
Back in the day, we called it a "low bridge", and if you did that to an opposing player you could count on an a$$-whoopin'

Disagree 100%

Foul calls were the same 19 on IL 17 on PU
Edey was in foul trouble throughout the gm
The flagrant call was a break for the illini.

Defense just couldn't get stops and when they did Purdue dominated the boards.

Gotta tip the cap to Kaufman Ren and PU. They were better tonight.
It's not the number of fouls called on Illinois, it's that coupled with the lack of calls on Purdue. The game should have been more like 17 for Illinois and 19 for Purdue. Taking away a couple offensive rebounds and points from Purdue and at least 5 made free-throws. Adding free throw points to Illinois. Out of bounds calls were poor too. Makes a huge difference in what turned out to be a close game.

Someone else has to be able to bring the ball up the court. Domask is average at it at best, but can’t fault him if he’s being asked to do it. Seems like Hawk should be able to because it’s unlikely his man is going to apply pressure.
Well, your point here is 100% of the reason why SOME people were banging the PG drum before the season. It's a tough ask for any of our guys. Doing as well as possibly could be expected.

Pleased with the comeback. If we show up before 5 min left we win. This stretch will be good for us come March-Domask is an alpha. This is a legit third weekend contender once TSJ is back.
Honestly if TSJ can come back with enough time to get into mid season form and produce like an all American, the team having to learn to play without him could end up making them even more dangerous come March.

Didn't really necessarily show today but it's forcing Harmon to find his offensive role off the bench, plus see more from guys like Guerrier, Goode, and Rodgers.

I see a team with two primary scoring options in Domask and Shannon and then a ton of complimentary scorers in Guerrier, Hawkins, Goode, and Harmon that can create a ton of headaches for anyone trying to gameplan for them.

“I think we have a decent chance at this if we can "Bootie Ball" with Marcus and Ty, then pass out to Marcus or Quincy for the trey when Zach collapses or can't make it out to the wing. Easier said than done but they did a nice job with this at NW considering this was just recently added to the offense arsenal.
BTW - everyone is talking about this like it's a new thing that started with Pickett and Pen State but wasn't there a lot of Bootie Ball going on when the Bulls cleared everyone out, then a big strong guard named MJ back his man down before dishing to a wide open BJ Armstrong (then insert John Paxson, then Toni Kukoc, then Steve Kerr, then any player who could hit the three)? Advantage to us if the guy now shooting the three is 6-10 and can drive if someone does happen to close in time. Wishful Kool-aid thinking?
Meant "pass out to Coleman or Quincy" not "Marcus or Quincy"

Maybe it wasn’t so bad to drink a little Kool-Aid. Better than drinking a lot of Panera Super Charged.

Early in the game they hit a 3 just prior to a shot clock violation and Hawkins 3 got waved off. That could have turned the game. Also still shake my head at Hawkins travel at the end of the game but he hit a huge 3 down the stretch

Totally agree. I can't believe they went to the monitor to review an out-of-bounds possession and came back with a flagrant call against Purdue. That may be one of the least Illinois-things that has happened to us in recent memory.
Something similar happened against Illinois a few years ago. They went to look at a flagrant foul against the other team. Ended up calling a foul on Illinois instead and game the other team the ball. I couldn't believe it.
