Purdue 83, Illinois 78 Postgame

Don’t like sending this but it’s a big stat that we all realized. Brad realized it a bit late but eventually did

Ty had a bad game, but I think people are dead wrong who think he's unplayable in the rematch. The game plan simply has to shift to where if Edey is deep sagging off of him, he shouldn't quickly give up the ball to someone on the perimeter. Instead, he needs to drive into him and find the cutter or kick. By immediately giving the ball up, Ty is taking himself out of the game making it 4 on 5. If he starts taking it into Edey looking to distribute, he's instead effectively taking Edey out of the game. Ty had a bad game but he also didn't have the correct mindset in this one. He'll be fine and improve from this. Dain on the other hand... Oof...

Well fought. Just didn’t come out with the right energy. Hoping we get some good news soon regarding TSJ’s status. Really hope we’ll have him for the rematch.

Not sure about that. Losing by 5 on the road to the number 1 team and it depends on what happens this weekend with the rest of the games.
Agree - already moved up in kenpom. AP is made up of some very bad voters though but this game was closer then most anticipated

I think undercutting someone is always a flagrant. In a pickup game, that would have caused a fight. You just don't do that. And no one can tell me that he didn't know. He knew what he was doing. Edey could have been called for more fouls. Early over the back non calls. Some of those rebounds were very aggressive and could have been called too. He doesn't play clean. That's why he will foul out in the tournament and they will lose early again....unless the refs get the memo.
Ugh, you are going to me make go clip this to show how wrong it is.

Jones was blocking out.

QG, giving maximum effort, jumped towards the ball which was towards Jones and to the left of each player. As in, he jumped over, but not all the way, Jones.

Jones was simply still in block out position. He stumbled back when QG was no longer there for him to lean into.

Crazy call in favor of the Illini.

Also, I think Quincy is okay. He made the free-throws gifted to him. Also the replay didn't look like he got a lot of weight on the wrist. His body did land on his arm, so he might be a little banged up.

You're so wrong here.

Jones was blocking out at first, yes. Guerrier goes up for a rebound. When this happens, he's entitled to a cylinder of space around him spanning all the way from the floor up to the ceiling.

Jones goes into this cylinder, breaking the rule of verticality.

This particular case was wreckless and was not a basketball play. Flagrant call is the correct call, no doubt.

Absolutely a foul on Purdue. Whether it warranted a flagrant foul is debatable. But it absolutely was a dangerous play that could have resulted in a broken wrist by Guerrier. Guerrier has a right to that space and the dude backed into him while he was in the air.

Beating the #1 team in the nation on their turf was always going to be a tall order even with Shannon. We helped them out greatly by spotting them a 20-4 run in the first 8 minutes. Credit to our kids for fighting back and making it very interesting at the end. I'm still very encouraged by what this group can accomplish moving forward.

My brother, there is no entitlement to contact in basketball. Blocking out doesn't mean you're allowed to push on another player. Just because this is the norm doesn't mean the rulebook covers your butt when it results in a dangerous play. Any Illini doing this would have just as thin of a defense.

Had us at 8 before the game - this isn’t surprising they moved up. Totally outperformed the expectation the metrics had for this game. Very very solid team and performance

Love that we are now 7th in KenPom offensive efficiency (as the average adjOE rank for NCAA champs is 6.2 and 22 of the last 25 champions were in the top 9).

Defense efficiency ranking has slipped a bit recently, but still in the top 20 (19th). In the range but toward the lower end of NCAA champs (average adjDE rank for NCAA champs is 8.6 and 21 of the last 25 champions were in the top 15). Would be nice to get back to the low teens where we have been much of the season.

Purdue is such a unique team it takes some time before even good teams find their comfort zone/start to understand what it takes to beat them. Feels like the sort of situation where they might win the first couple and then get beat if there is a third matchup in the conference tournament or beyond. Would be fine beating them in Champaign too!

I went and watched again. My phone is too smart so it won't let me screen grab from YT TV.

It reminds me of why I struggle to hear eyewitness reports and be able to trust them. I still see it exactly as I stated.

Quincy DID NOT jump straight up. He jumped towards and to the left. Selfless effort, but not Jones fault. All of a sudden Q was just jumping over him, and Jones is already smaller and then squatting down to block out.

Checking in on team efficiency after the game:

Looks like Illinois is...still pretty good. (and offense in the conference is insane so far) Not a good defensive effort tonight, mostly because the rebounding was so subpar. Overall an A effort though.

The Jones undercut was definitely a foul, but not enough for a flagrant in a tough game. I think what probably happened was the refs saw the clear foul they missed on the monitor and because the out of bounds was inconclusive or looked out on Illinois, they called the flagrant to "even" it out. Overall the refs were awful in this one, but I do think it was fairly even. But I certainly get both sides complaints- I mean Edey picked up 2 fouls, I've never seen refs call him for. And those bailout foul called on Illinois late in the 2nd half were egregious. It was just a really bad crew in this one, nothing more.
