Illinois 70, Indiana 62 Postgame

The only reason I mentioned last year being worse than 09 is because of WHY they lost. I drove 6+ hours round trip, just to witness a bunch of hungover high school kids trying to play basketball against a NCAA team. If only Monster did its job for MM

It was an ugly win. But for those foreseeing gloom and doom, can you tell me which one of these "W"'s is ugly and which one is pretty?

W W W W W W
W W W W W W W
W W

we're 15-5, which is pretty damned good. Is it where we wanted to be? No, Loyalty would not be satisfied unless we're 20-0. Oh, and by the way, the following ranked teams lost today

7 Kansas loses to unranked ISU
8 Auburn loses to unranked Mississippi St.
11 Oklahoma loses to 20 Texas Tech

I think the announcers highlighted that top ranked teams were 4-7 last week, or something along those lines. Every team is going to have multiple losses this season.
It's just a small thing, but W's always look better in Orange.

Let's also note that there were a substantial number of people on here (as well as sports media) who expected us to be lucky to crack the top 25 this year.

I am still relatively pleased with where we stand.

Thank you. That W is the only stat that matters….we played like 💩 and still came out with a conference dub and that’s what good teams do. No team is gonna have it every night they take the court. The good teams figure out to how to win.
Yep. This team was dominant pre-Kansas DA and has been asked to re-calibrate twice.

I think it's fair to give them 2 more games without pulling the fire alarm.

Should have been more involved late in the game. Not loud when Indiana had the ball until the last minute.
We were at the game and this is a terrible take. The crowd got on their feet MULTIPLE times when we needed a defensive stop and at least twice, the defense let up an "and 1".

When the crowds gets into it, the D has to do their part and let's be honest, after a great stretch at the end of the first half....this was ugly.

About to end a January where we played 9 games, 7 of them coming in 19 days.

Terrence was out, then back in.

We’re a team on tired legs that’s playing sped up. It’s been a funky month.

Getting a longer rest than we’ve had in a while before Nebraska & a 6 day stretch for before heading to East Lansing should bold well for us in a number of ways.

Once Terrence gets his swagger back & these guys get their legs back under them, we’ll look like a completely different team.

An ugly win is better than a pretty loss. We need to maintain our perspective here. Yes, we are going through a very rough patch, but it’s much better now than late February. We have time to re-adjust.

The integration of TSJ is proving more difficult than we all expected. I have faith that this will all get worked out and we’ll be hitting on all cylinders soon.

I think there was too much standing around and not enough cutting to the hoop as other posters have mentioned. Need more movement and motion for our offense to be successful. We also need to really work on our interior D as we are giving up too many points in the paint. Missing a boatload of shots at the rim. The law of averages should start working in our favor.

And I live in Scottsdale, AZ. If we get to the Final Four I’ll host a pre-game bash at my house with @pruman91, @illini0440, @Indy Illini Fan and @OrangeNBrood_Redux as the guests of honor before we all head to Glendale for the game. I’ve not run this idea past my wife but I’m sure she’ll be cool with it.
My husband and I have already bought out tix from Rockford to Mesa to stay with our Illini best friends in Surprise from April 3-10. We’ll bring some beer and take you up on your offer, thank you very much. 😊

I have not done the science on this hypothesis, but I seriously think the expectations of ~50% of Illini hoops fans over the age of, say, 30, are warped by the way the '04-'05 team basically steamrolled everyone.

That's a sizeable contingent of posters on this board, I'd venture to guess.

And it is somewhat unique. I mean, how many other teams' fans have ever experienced so many wins in such style? We were 6 points away from 39-0.

I'll take the W but boy was that painful to watch. They killed us in the paint and that was with their starting big out. We have to start finishing at the rim.

With Ware there is a good chance we would of not gotten to the rim.

The one think that this teams is currently lack is is the the 04/05's team level of consistency.
It looked like this team was gaining that consistency prior to the TSJ suspension

More reactions from the ugly win game a day later. Thanks goodness we have Every Day Guys!
1) The defense played well enough for a struggling offense to win
2) The team seemed to be feeling the NW overtime game, no legs
3) Dain & DGL gave us some spark off the bench
4) Colman is still a defensive stud (elite), he was the target and what we gave them by guarding the 3
5) TSJ had some big FT's and plays at the end, I hope this game helps him
6) We are still a 10 top team

We should have beaten Indiana by att least 20. We missed far too many wide open threes, all by proven plus shooters from distance. We also need to clean up the defense, especially defense in the paint. We probably need to double more; teams are getting to the rim far too easily.

Once again, we have met the enemy, and it is us. Doing what we do best - dumb non-conference scheduling. From Robert at Illiniboard.com: "As you might remember, while most Big Ten teams played two games in early December, we only played one. I believe the Jimmy V Classic game + the Tennessee game four days later took away our ability to schedule a second December conference games. This means we have 19 games between January 1 and the conference tournament, not 18.

Which is why we're in this difficult stretch that Underwood has been pointing to. Starting with the Michigan game last week, it's Michigan, then two days off before Rutgers, then two days off before Northwestern, then two days off before Indiana, then two days off before Ohio State (Tuesday evening in Columbus)."

I’m amazed Harmon was +24. That sure felt like maybe +2 at best thanks to his last shot. Guess that’s why I’m not a coach.
I was casually watching this game at a bar but this makes me feel like I forgot how to watch basketball because I was in the same boat as you

I take it you missed the Michigan game where we trailed most of it playing like crap and like today, found a way to win without our best.

There’s no reason we can’t be frustrated in the moment. The only loss this year that I’m mad at after the fact is still Maryland.

Well, I can back you up with your hypothesis. I wholeheartedly agree with this, at least this is so in my case. I just can't seem to just sit and enjoy a game in real-time anymore. In this game, I expected a 20-point win. I expected the Illini to play like they did against the home win against NW. Indiana is a worse team than NW and the Illini were without TSJ so it makes sense that we blow out Indiana? But nope. A game like the Maryland game will put me in a funk for a week thinking how can this team win in March when they can't even beat a poor MD team? I keep hearkening back to the good old days (the '05 team) when they beat everyone (almost). I need help. Does anyone know a good (cheap) psychiatrist who specializes in curing stupidity?
