Illinois 87, Nebraska 84 OT Postgame

Positives: I thought they moved the ball pretty well early. Ty is becoming an absolute monster playing off ball. They got a win despite shooting about as poorly as you possibly can, just missed a ton of good shots.

On the other hand some very questionable decision making when up 10. Just abandoned going inside and shot a bunch of 3s coupled with some turnovers allowing Nebraska to come back. Also, the Shannon shot attempt up 3 in OT was atrocious, go to the basket. For a team that has shot free throws pretty well, they did not do so today.

Need Guerrier to be able to start knocking down some shots to open up the floor, looks hesitant to shoot. Goode did a lot of little things well and made some hustle plays but he's gotta hit those open looks same with Harmon.

Every team somehow seems to hit tough shots against us. That's because we generally come out with less than maximum energy on D at the start of games. We give up a few easy looks and give the opponent some confidence then it is a dog fight. We are way too soft to start games and it has to change soon. There's no way we should give up 73 pts to any team (like we did in regulation tonight), let alone a middle of the road B10 one.

And lets all be honest before we get too deep in this.....Nebraska hit a TON of tough shots.
We miss a bunch of wide open quality 3's, to include Goode going 0-4. Also missed some layups we typically make including Dainja missed dunk. Missed key free throws including Domask to win it. So a lot had to go wrong to lose this one and we almost did.

We out rebounded then 50-33 that is the reason we won. How many of those were hustle

They hit hard 3s and didn’t miss a FT. That is hard to beat and we did it. Nebraska is a good team and should make the tournament they just need to take care of their business

We should be ranked around 10 tomorrow. A good quality win for the resume. Learn from the mistakes at the end of the game

I’m very concerned about this team. With TSJ out we finally started using the length and athleticism combined with player and ball movement on offense and looked impossible to guard. We scored with efficiency inside the lane which opened up open outside opportunities. Now we are back to watching booty ball and relying on hitting threes. Outside of Domask we now look tentative on offense and as good as he can be, good coaches in this league will take his effectiveness away. With Quincy and Justin looking hesitant to shoot in rhythm and Terrance still not shooting well we aren’t likely to shoot people out of the gym. I’m concerned we will allow this talent to go to waste if coaching doesn’t improve. This team is playing well below its ability right now.
Don’t get me started on how ineffective we are on out of bounds execution. Definition of insanity…
Glad we won but there is a difference between winning ugly in a hard fought game and getting fortunate when you don’t play/coach well. I’m not a Brad-hater, I love the talent he’s brought and the passion he possesses but this has been an underwhelming season based on coaching. Again…hoping we get it turned around.

Fortunate to pull this one out. Don’t understand from the 10 point lead on. Brad sitting on his hands. Multiple possessions dribbling around the perimeter and launching a bad 3 as the shot clock expires, not using fouls to give and then giving one at half court. Fouling there best shooter. Abandoned going to the rim. This team is better than that. Shout out to Ty for clutch rebounding. We need to get back to playing like we did against FAU to make a deep tournament run.🏃‍♂️

This win is for my big brother (74) who I lost this morning to a heart attack, the guy who initiated my passion for all things Illini. He’s the reason I went to Illinois as he was a senior when I was a freshman. There ya go, Charlie! This one’s for you! 🧡 💙

Sorry for your loss. Hopefully the win provided some small comfort for you and your family. My condolences.

The good teams find a way to win games they don't deserve to win. We definitely were very lucky to come out with a W against a very dangerous Nebraska group.

Have to be much better than this @ East Lansing.

Illinois was up 61 - 55 at one point and had like 5 - 6 opportunities to extend the lead and did not. Credit to the defense for putting the offense in a position to put the game away, but it didn't happen. To me, that was the point I thought this game was going to the wire. During that span: missed layups, easy dunks and forced drives.
