But....I am sure you could possibly, maybe squint your eyes or think that is is POSSIBLE that a ref might have a reason to cuss BU???

I'm just guessing that BU might use a little colorful language to another adult who could possibly use it back at him.
He didn't though. He was trying to get Owen's attention to ask him why TJ didn't't get the call then Owen responded with a colorful word.

Thanks. I love every aspect of that, including the irony of the yelling. It sounds like something I would have done and laughed at myself later.:)
Not excusing Underwood’s language, but officials shouldn’t be swearing at players and coaches. I officiate soccer up to the occasional Division 1 game, and I’d never think of cussing out a coach. Obviously, I won’t criticize a lot on judgment calls, but things like this and what I saw on the 2nd Scott Drew technical Saturday night are instances where officials need to conduct themselves in a more professional matter. I’d put something like this exchange in the camp of “Officials already have it tough. Don’t do things to make it tougher on you.”

I saw 2 fouls where we didn't get FTs but were obviously in the act of shooting (one on TSJ, one on Hawkins). Then the foul at the end where Mast got FTs but wasn't in the act of shooting. That's a potential swing of 6 points right there.

Also, Domask had an obvious travel that wasn't called. He even posted on Twitter: "I think I got away with one lol" or something like that.
Agreed. There have been games in seasons past where we walk into Bloomington, and you see what the refs are calling on you vs. Indiana and you're about 99% positive the fix is in. But this season, all I'm seeing is just really terrible and inconsistent reffing going both ways. It's just refs completely in over their heads and unable to competently do their jobs. We need B10 ref open tryouts. Or find the best ones in the nation from other conferences ,open up the B10 coffers, and make them offers they can't possibly turn down. Relegate Courtney and Lurch to D2 reffing

At some point the fact that multiple teams shoot out of their minds against us leaves our defense, not luck, as the common factor...

Except as I posted on the last page it wasn't the team shooting out of their minds, it was a single player who has been known to go on ridiculous heaters before. The rest of Nebraska shot well below average as a team. Even adding Tominaga in there Nebraska only shot 42.6% as a team they just happened to have 2 guys who made a bunch of 3s.

On the season the number suggest that the defense is doing what BU wants them to do. Low foul numbers, low 3point attempts, low assist numbers given up but also low turnovers. Basically they force the other team to play one on and dare them to win that way. So far its been a recipe for winning basketball but sometimes you have to live with a guy going off.

I think there is a little something to it... That's why I have wanted to find shot selection stats/analysis for (in particular) the game vs NW at home and also for the game last night vs NEB at home. Many, many well-contested shots going in during both of those games for our opponents, meanwhile we have short shots and layups rolling off the rim at a 50 percent rate.

We are, after all, sub-300 in CBB in luck rating.

It just seemed like we played 20 points better than NEB last night. There were 2 or 3 absolutely terrible NEB possessions where a lucky bounce ended in a made 3. That's in addition to what I thought I viewed last night as far as overall shot selection.

All of that said with the caveat that I strongly agree with your main point, which is that our defense has went in the toilet. I think both things happened last night: (a) our defense again gave up too many easy 2s and also (b) we were on the wrong end of a lot of dice-rolls. I'm happy we still won, but the defense needs something... badly.
Kenpom D has dropped, O inceased for this team, whereas Luck has essentially held steady. I don't know if I buy that as being the majority of the answer.

I have to wonder if some that is us getting gassed & TSJ getting his fitness back. I'm hoping a week off will let us get right and close the season well.

I agree to an extent but they also did a great job on basically everyone except Tominaga, Gary, and Mast at the 3pt line.

Completely shutdown Williams and Wilcher. The effort is there just need to clean up some things that is leading to wide open 3s.

It seems like Brad hates it but I think this roster could trap effectively in certain situations but they don't really do it. Think they could force a ton of turnovers if they trapped more along the sidelines.

It’s a hard game to ref. The game’s moving at 100 miles an hour. The plays you’re blowing your whistle on happen in a split second. You don’t always have a great angle.

Which is all the more reason to hire full time referees who live & breathe the game and pay them very well.

The non call by Courtney " no gonads " Green on the chicken wing by Jones in the purdont game should be a disqualifying factor against him reffing at this level.........It was right in front of him , less than 5 feet away............JMHO........

B1G refereeing is better and NBA refereeing is worse than they used to be.

I love that inbounds play. Just add more variations. Maybe one guy doesn't take off and you make an OB pass, then go.... The first time I saw it being used I thought this has so many good possibilities.
I usually do too. But it was not working last night 😣. Seemed like we hadn’t practiced it much.

Something I noticed during the Nebby game that I haven’t noticed or paid attention to before that was when we got an offensive rebound in the front court the shot clock reset at 20 seconds and not 30 seconds. Is that a new rule this year or has it been that way prior to this season?

I don’t think Illinois got really any home cooking. Nebbie got away w moving screens all night. They called them on Illinois. They didn’t call any fouls on our drives. Nebbie was holding two of our plays when they stole that inbounds pass.

One of the holding plays looked like a wrestling take down.......i was sure they would call a foul on it , but as usual the inept refs let it go...........jmho.......

Yeah, I responded to another quote, but I think the answer to my own question is that this week of rest & training could do wonders for getting back that extra step that had us playing truly elite defense pre TSJ suspension.

A couple random and pointless observations

1) As a half Asian Bradley grad, I’m gonna have to root for Nebraska the rest of the year because is Mask and Tominaga.

2) As a former Missouri Valley student athlete, I’m uneasy that the Valley is becoming the AAA league for the Big 10.

3). I’m not sure what Ty Rodgers does on the floor really makes him the “point”, but he needs to be in the top 3 in minutes. He may end up being my favorite Illini of all time by the time he is done.

4) my junior high basketball team had better inbounds plays. I just don’t get it.

5) happy with the win. I think Nebraska makes the tourney and they are better than people think.

Domask is the crunch time PG and has been all year.

But yeah, Rodgers is increasingly the heartbeat of the team, this is everything that was hyped when he was in HS. Sky is the limit if his jump shot develops.

This has been a rule for at least 4 to 5 years (a little surprised it took you this long to notice ;)). I believe it went into effect in 2019 season where an offensive rebound resets the clock to 20 seconds.

Seemed like Green was trying to screw nebby out of their upset of wiscy a few days earlier.

While we're on refs, seeing more and more of these delayed whistles to see how the play finishes first. Like it's a foul, unless the shot goes in, then we're gonna let the foul go OR we then decide to go ahead and call the and1. Just feels too inconsistent

I completely agree. From both my coaching experiences over multiple sports and umping. I was always very calmly pleased with myself for maintaining control. But, sometimes you just react. You have to admit that particular rant is ironically funny as hell.

If Nebraska makes the tourney (I think they will), they will be a dangerous team. A bunch of good offensive sets and great shooters. And their defense always forces a lot of 3’s. In a single game if they manage to be hitting their 3’s and you aren’t, you’re cooked.

If we aren’t one of the best offensive rebounding teams in the country, we lose that game by 10+. Glad we have so many different ways to win, and actually pretty impressive to win a game against a team that good when they are on and we can’t make a 3.

That said, let’s start playing our best ball from here on out, starting Saturday in East Lansing.

Excited to see if we can get some things cleaned up/tightened up with a week to just work on us.
They will live and die by making difficult shots. Wilcher hit them last game. Toni nags this game.

Their defense is suspect. We missed a lot of wide open threes and exposed them at the start of the second half by getting layups and dunks by driving and dishing to the open man.

They are good though but high risk, high return

Watching the highlights...
Nebraska shot a bunch of 3, and quite a few bad shots went in.
Harmon and Goode were 0/10 combined with a lot of good looks. They hit 4 of those and nebby misses a couple tough 3's and this is an 18 point game...
Sometimes it's just a bad luck night and we were still good enough to win. I'll take the W and move on
And yet, we were up 10 late. We will truly be elite when we seize what we have but not turning the ball over during this time. This happened with Marquette so it is a pattern.

Also, I forget where I read about “kill shots” that measured a teams ability to go on a 10-0 run, and we ranked high in that category. But we also ranked high to give them up. We have to work on that aspect.
