I don't understand why any of these guys would want to go to DePaul. It would be a monumental undertaking to turn that program around. I've always wondered why good coaches go to places like that or Vanderbilt that are just about impossible to win at consistently.
See Northwestern and/or Rutgers. They were the dregs of men's college basketball. Northwestern is legit and Rutgers has the #2 ranked recruiting class is coming until town.

You take the job because it's a P5 job. There aren't many of them, much less open ones.

Yes. All the original members of “Mookie Blaylock” a.k.a. Pearl Jam ;)

There are few things in life I am a bigger fan of than Illini basketball, but Pearl Jam is one of them - the soundtrack to my high school years has lot of Ten, Vs and Vitalogy. I was aware of the Mookie Blaylock backstory, 10, etc. but had never seen that particular clip. Thanks for sharing! They still have lots of sports related merch at their shows, I think they even had mini-basketballs during their last tour. PJ has a new record that should be released later this year...I recommend you rediscover them!

In 11 seasons, Chris Collins has had Northwestern over .500 only 4 times (assuming this year is #4). You're fired from any school with any level of expectation long before you get to that 11th year. At a pretty much any other school, Collins would have been fired after the 2019, 2020, or 2021 seasons.

Pikiell has been very mid at Rutgers, which is a step up. But also Rutgers has more money than DePaul and Northwestern.

The reason I wouldn't touch DePaul, unless I was an assistant getting the bump to a head job, is they are not on a level playing field in their conference. There needs to be some major changes or you can't just coach your way out of that hole. You could probably say the same thing about Northwestern, but as I've stated above, Northwestern's expectations are insanely low. Even DePaul wouldn't allow the stretch Collins had in years 5-8 of his tenure where he was 45-74.

I think Pikiell has done a great job with his resources. The RAC is tough, working on creating a flow of talent, consistency is the next step. I respect what he is doing (despite this year’s results).

Porter would definitely be welcomed back to SLU. Ford just stuck in the mud. They need a change.

Yep ... I think Moser may be more interested in SLU than people think ... Midwest, Jesuit ... Right up his alley ...

Some other names I'd watch for with SLU: Chris Holtmann, Josh Schertz, Darian DeVries, and Drew Valentine ... They will also definitely call Chris Mack ... But I don't think he would have any interest ...

If they fail to land any of those guys: Ben McCollum ...

Does SLU have that much more money than Loyola to be able to poach Valentine?

SLU in the past few years have made a concerted effort to improve their NIL collective. Supposedly key reason they were able to keep Collins last year.

All of these names would be welcomed to SLU. Even McCollum. He has put his time at NWMo St., very successful at Div 2 level and still young. I always thought he would enter Div 1 in the MVC.

So for DePaul job I assume Hurley interviewed, Moser needs to work on what to do with a buyout, and Schertz/Drew will interview soon…?
I mean, Bobby Hurley might (will?) need an Alford-style soft landing position. He hasn't exactly been lighting the world on fire at Arizona State.

I really like Pikiel and Collins. I am surprised no one has poached Collins away. I think he will do great away from NW academic restrictions.

Collins is a Chicago guy. His dad coached the Bulls. He went to high school in the Chicago area. Combine that with some of the lowered basketball expectations at Northwestern, and it really doesn't surprise me that he's stayed for 11 years. If he knows he has lowered expectations, I can see why he would want to stay and not go somewhere else. But I do agree that he seems to do a good job of getting his teams to play greater than the sum of the parts all things considered. Recruiting at a school with higher expectations may be an issue scaring other programs away, but that's just a guess on my part.

It's funny, he's both completely transformed that program in a way everyone thought was impossible and he's also 74-126 in the Big Ten.

He's not a Chicago guy, he's a North Shore guy, he is the living manifestation of Northwestern vibes, much moreso than Fitz was even.

He could get a better job than Northwestern easily, but I doubt that's what he's really seeking. He'd take Duke in a heartbeat, maybe the NBA interests him, but I don't see him as one to jump to Louisville or Arkansas or something just because that's a bigger better program.

SLU has also upgraded facilities a little.

OK, that's fair. Call my initial comment one from someone who has never lived in the Chicago area. Given my brother's kids go to Glenbard West, I get the suburbs are different than Chicago proper. To be fair, my overall point about Collins still stands and I agree with you. I don't really see Collins making a move to "just another bigger program". Yes, he'd go to Duke. Yes, he'd go to the NBA if it came calling (but I don't see him as an NBA head coach). I think he's a Northwestern lifer until they push him out one way or another unless Duke comes calling - and I certainly don't really see that anytime soon given they gave Scheyer the keys despite his age and lack of head coaching experience.

I get Northwestern has been a dumpster fire for like 100 years, but can anyone really imagine a program like Duke hiring a guy with a significantly losing record in conference play over 10 plus years?

Can I imagine Duke ignoring better candidates to keep it in the family with someone who gives them the warm and fuzzies about what a unique and special program they are?

Yes, yes I can.

Duke hired a 33-year-old career assistant who had zero head coaching experience and had never spent a day of coaching outside of the Duke men's basketball program. They will keep it in the program at least as long as Coach K walks this Earth.

I don't dabble often into the rumor mill but I'm also hearing that Moser would be interested in options back in the Midwest that will be viewed as unconventional for the coaching ladder.

He should have listened to himself when he swore up and down that he didn't want to leave his happy situation just to get a "better" job.

Yeah. But it’s more than “being in the family” at Duke” Coach K, Mr. Massive Control-freak isn't gonna let someone come in there (family or no) that deviates AT ALL from the system he’s established.

It’s more than Collin’s losing BigTen record at Northwestern. Basketball Jesus (K), wouldnt want Collins because he has too many of his own ideas. Yes, I think he’s that much of a control freak. A West Point Cadet, a Bob Knight Disciple, and one of the most successful coaches ever…yes absolutely.

University/AD/Alumni are thinking okay we mustn’t upset Basketball Jesus…so they’re gonna be in lockstep with whatever K says. He’s been grooming Scheyer…because he can get him to do almost exactly what he wants.

It’s a tricky thing following a legend. It’s a good problem to have. But is also a lot of baggage.

Also, worth noting…over that span, what kind of a record do you think Brad Underwood would have had at NW with those resources? Would he have been better than Collins? Nope. I don’t think so. Izzo…Bo Ryan…nope…nope…

Basketball Jesus?…Nope…a million years ago he struggled at Duke to rebuild too. He about got canned at one point.
