Michigan State 88, Illinois 80 Postgame

Was this the first time we had Hawkins paying booty and looking to deal? I thought he was good at it.....some good passes, so good makes, but down the stretch the turnovers simply gave the game away. If we are not going hard to the hole, we won't get the whistles, especially in the tourney in March.

This makes no sense. (Not your comment). How much responsibility does have with the defense? When did this change occur or has it been all season? Because we sure aren’t the same defensive team as early on

Hamer controls the defensive strategy with input from other coaches ...

Tyler controls the offensive strategy with input from other coaches ...

I like Bielein but I’m not seeing that. We’ve seen selfish teams but not this one. Maybe not smart but I don’t see selfish.
I feel Beilein is directing that at TSJ. He said it after the Nebraska game and today. I kind of agree with him. Going through Hawkins got us the lead and them took some questionable quick jumpers. TSJ taking quick threes at the rate he has the last couple games (5 of 19) is likely what our opponents prefer TSJ to do instead of rolling through Hawk or TSJ attacking, drawing fouls, causing foul trouble, and making the extra pass. Since coming back and taking so many 3s he is shooting at 23% from three i think they said today. I think thats what Beilein sees too and ut was not at the right time in both games to be taking those shots.

Our defense has gotten so much worse and I don’t understand how.

Guess teams have figured it out.

One bright spot: this was as close to mizzou Shannon as we’ve seen since he’s come back.
It’s called Goode and Domask on the floor at the same time. We are ok with one liability on D but not two. Then add in Harmon and it’s really not good. Get up by 8 and make sure your best 5 defenders are in the game late!

ABSOLUTELY. Getting tired of not having the ball in someone’s hands that’s a PG! Coleman has better handles
Coleman is an amazing ballhandler in the open floor for a 6'10" guy, but he absolutely does not have better handles than Domask, the sheer physics of the limb lengths involve present certain unavoidable limitations.

The nature of the way this roster is built makes it a very vulnerable team to ball pressure up the floor.

Luke Goode just CANNOT play in the final 5 minutes of games. Ty needs to bring the ball up & play at the end of games…. Say what you want about the players but this game was 100% on Brads ridiculous substitutions. Horrible.
I also don’t know why we went away from initiating the offense through a Coleman post up on every possession. We were getting great looks out of it, what built the lead to 72-64. And then we just go away from it for zero reason.

I've been pretty vocal about where I stand on this topic ...

Shoot I was pretty vocal about it the second the promotion was announced ...
There are some pretty bad issues that appear to be scheme. Some of it is obviously execution but seems like that’s the minority. Example: Hawkins sagging so deep on pick at the elbow allowed Hoggard and Walker to either pull up or get downhill to the rim. You’ve gotta hedge a little b/c MSU big guys weren’t doing anything. 2nd half the guards got in the lane at will and there was zero adjustment.

Yes but if a couple of the shots went down we wouldn’t be talking about this. And those shots were pretty darn close to falling. Hawkins missed some in the first half that went in and out. Shannon missed a couple wide open shots that looked like they were going in and Goode as well. If those fall it’s a different story.
We didn’t lose by 2 or something. We were losing 88-80 when I lost the feed.

We took a bunch of jump shots with the lead. Missing jump shots is the best way to let a team back in a game.

Weren’t we up 9 when Goode missed the first of a 1 and 1?

Up 9 to down 8 in like 6 mins of game time?
That’s not bc some shots were “oh so close”

When is Brad going to take over and hand the defense to Chester or someone else?

Great question ... I really don't have a good answer for you on that one ...

Adjustments need to be made ...

Brad choosing to give Goode extended run why Ty is on the bench is beyond baffling to me ... He is a defensive liability ... If he can't make catch and shoot threes ... He is providing nothing ...

I would have also liked to have seen more Dain today ...

I also am sick and tired of Domask being the only option bringing the ball up the floor ... Keep the defense guessing ... Hawkins ... DGL ... Ty ... Throw different looks at them ... Domask dribbles up and just tosses it high to Coleman every freaking time ... Hoggard figured it out ... Turnover and the game is over ...

One problem with that. We don't have a legitimate PG and it hurt us on BOTH ends. You can't play the last 7 minutes of the game with one guy who can't play defense and the other guy who can't play offense. Those are both bad options.

I'm not overly upset because we all knew this was going to be an issue back in June 2023. It's reared it's head the last couple of weeks. This same exact meltdown happened versus Nebraska.

But I don’t see it as selfish. He’s your star player and he’s gonna take some shots that may not be great. But he doesn’t play like a “me” guy. Understand what you’re saying but I’m not seeing it.

And he'd be right. None of that assessment is incorrect. All of that is 100% in the players control.
You can always blame it all on the coaching. You can always blame it all on the players. Both positions are wrong almost all the time.

Yet this board sure doesn’t think so.

Coaches sometimes get out-coached and out-schemed. It happens. This is Tom Izzo here.

I’m not gonna complain about X’s & O’s.
X’s and O’s are MUCH MORE subjective.
I’m more annoyed at our guys lack of understanding what to do down the stretch. We’re not on the same page and disciplined to close out these games. That is coaching.
