I might have been reading too much into it at the time, but I seem to remember press conferences where one writer kept asking Underwood and Holtmann about the other and Holtmann acted like it was ridiculous to consider Underwood in his league (again my feeling) and Underwood said something to the effect of “you’ve gotta remember Chris inherited a much better situation”.

1) does anybody else share my vague recollection?
2) Holtmann was generally negative about Illinois after Groce firing, but was there animosity between Holtmann and Underwood? Brad seems pretty popular in coaching circles?
3) most relevant, who did Holtmann piss off to get fired in the middle of February. It’s not like the typical timeline for getting the first spot in the carousel is gonna get them a better coach. Feels like camping out three weeks before the iPhone 16 that you can just have one delivered to your house on launch day.

Ohio State pulled Holtzman out of Butler when Illinois could not. They have the $$$, good b-ball history and a good recruiting base.

FAU coach - Dusty May fresh off Final Four (Indiana native, IU grad)
SDSU coach- Brian Dutcher fresh off NCAA Finals (B10 roots) I remember when he was grad assistant under Lou H
Arkansas coach - Musselman - NCAA success, former NBA head coach
Iowa State coach TJ Oltzberger - done well at SD State, UNLV
Dayton coach - Anthony Grant - failed at Alabama
Ole Miss - Chris Beard - great success at Texas Tech,
UCLA - Mick Cronin - sucessful at Cincinnati and UCLA but maybe tired of LA

JMO - I think they go after Dusty May, Musselman, Beard or Cronin. They will be competing with Michigan, UCLA, Louisville, Arizona State and Oklahoma State?,

In regards to point 2, Holtmann and Groce had a long history together. Teammates at Taylor, and Holtmann was an assistant under Groce at Ohio. Could be some sticking up for his buddy in his tone.

Dutcher is old but he's a rock solid basketball coach and if he's got the energy to give it a go and a plan for how he'd staff up and run the NIL machine at a big program (what better mentor than Steve Fisher?) that would be a sneaky great hire a la when Larranaga went to Miami.

Could pay off in another 18 years. Isn't Fran's oldest datin Caitlin Clark?
Damn... I am so not looking forward to Bohannon Clark McCaffery. Fran's probably getting his son to poke holes in his condoms as we speak while screaming at him that protection defense is overrated and to focus on good motion, scoring at will, and finishing hard inside.

Caitlin has swag, but I’m not sure there is a drop of anything resembling swag coming from the McCaffery half of that experiment.
Swag might not be the right word, but if it's Connor McCaffery we're talking about, he definitely was bringing a "my Dad is the coach and I'm therefore bulletproof" attitude to the table.

Cobra Kai Energy, let's say
