Illinois 85, Maryland 80 Postgame

#301
We make out first 3 shots or the game, all 3's, and we end up 5 for 20 shooting 3s?

Reese, Young, Harris-Smith and Scott a pretty formitable team, glad they were 4 for 18 from three

Maryland is 11th in the conference and still a rock fight from start to finish

One of our better games.

Dumas block Harmon pass, Hawkins dunk worth the price of admission.

After watching this team shoot free throws at the beginning of the season, who would have predicted a 32 for 36 outing including 2/2 from Ty, in a pressure-cooked road game (not to mention rabid fans mercilessly attacking Terrance with each attempt)? All I can say is "WOW!" Can't remember another game at the line like this one. Could mean the difference in advancing or not in the NCAA tourney when traditional buckets are hard to come by.

Was at the game and went down toward the court to say hello to some other Illini fans after…saw that Epps was there and was talking to Terrance and a couple others. I’m happy he moved on, but it was a classy move to come and see his old teammates.

The first Illinois-MD game I saw in DC was at what's now the Verizon Center the weekend after Thanksgiving '99 at a tournament comprising the Illini, Terps, GW and Seton Hall. We lost by two, in a complete thriller, to the team that would mature to an NC winner two seasons later. I vividly recall frosh Frankie driving the lane for the game-tying shot in the waning seconds, which rolled around and out. First and only time I saw him play in person.

That's the way it has been for us here for many years: in and out. That Cowan dagger Ayo's soph year after we'd led for 39:55. Coming here in '22 four days after that epic MLK-Day Purdue game when we were the superior team but Kofi was concussed, BBV started at center, and Curbelo was still half-speed, and also ill. Last year when Epps' trey racked in and out in the waning moments, Young drained one at the other end, and we lost. So close so often.

I'll give MD its due. They play to the level of their opposition this year and they were nails-tough last evening. Young is a joy to watch, I've enjoyed Donta Scott for five seasons now and Reese, well, he's a sharp-elbowed tool but gets it done. Mike LaTulip noted on the post game WDWS shows last evening that they're 1-6 in one-possession games. They're a lot better than 6-9; could easily be 9-6.

So sweet to leave that dungeon with a W. Outstanding Illini fan presence. After the game we wandered down to the bench area. Jayden Epps was there joking with Sencire and TSJ. Amani, who's local, must have had two dozen family and friends there. He walked up into the stands to greet everyone. Luke and Marcus had family there, too. Met and chatted with Robert of IlliniBoard for the first time.

Of course, I can't visit Xfinity Center without taking home foul memories of low-rent Terp fans. I'll long remember the "Lock him up!!" chants at Terrance, the ~ dozen BIG TEN SPORTSMANSHIP GUIDELINES admonishments on the Jumbotron, and the students booing that message every time. And Terrance, throughout the 2H, shooting FTs over and over into the student wall at that end of the court as they chanted at him, sinking FT after FT with dead calm. I believe he missed only one.

But that memory is flushed into the septic tank by the sequence of CoHawk ill-advisedly saving a ball OOB at our baseline out toward the Terp end, Young picking it off and driving unimpeded toward the hoop to finally take the lead for MD, Marcus catching him and spectacularly denying the shot w/o fouling, and Justin, having reversed his momentum completely from near the opposite baseline and sprinting, Terry Hawthorne-like, down the floor to cover Reese and deny an easy trailer basket, grabbing the rebound and shooting a 3/4-court dart to CoHawk, who finishes with an and-one slam, palms the ball, and trolls the student section. The game turned on that sequence. Oh... and 89% FT shooting. On the road. Into a dead-hostile crowd.

🍰🍨🍧

We have a special team. They're frustrating at times, of course. As CoHawk noted afterward, they had some lapses down the stretch. (And he wasn't exaggerating, BTW, about there being usually 1k here: in '22 on a Friday night there couldn't have been more than 3k in the building. Around 13-14k or so by my reckoning showed up last evening, and they got loud.) MD threw everything they had at us and led us precisely once during the entire game.

Gonna remember this one fondly for many years. A toast to my brothers and sisters in the DMV who are savoring as much as I am this morning. And to our Illini hardwood warriors for giving us such satisfaction.

One more time:

I thought that making disparaging remarks about the officials in post game interviews was against conference rules. Maybe he needs to be fined. Willard is full of himself, that's for sure. It was a very physical game. For Maryland to stay close they had to be physical. That is the way they played in Champaign. Reese, although a fine player, is known throughout the conference as a foul prone player.

Perhaps Willard should recruit players who when shooting a 3 point shot looks like it has more than a 1% chance of going in. :)

They’ve stepped up their free throw shooting of late. I believe they’ve been 80%+ four out of last five games. Not ready to declare it a strength, but like the direction the arrow is pointing.

We will look back on Domask's tenure here and realize how lucky we were in the same way we do with Feliz in terms of the types of players they are. Maybe even moreso. Marcus is an incredibly consequential addition in so many ways. Our team simply would have failed without him after the TSJ legal issues surfaced and yet he comes back and still is alpha B, very happily. Wow did we get lucky not only that he is so good on many axis but that he and TSJ support each other fundamentally. Brad has his culture and it is fire.
this takes an incredible load off of Coleman. he can let the game come to him. not to mention what he did when TSJ was suspended. i still dont think we have exactly figured out how to play again with these guys. we could get better.

We're up to 74.2% for the season, which is 83rd in the country.

great description. Live - it was MD wow and before I could blink Justin had the ball and made the pass.
Until replay, I didn't appreciate how Justin got back, blocked out Reese, and made the perfect pass.

Would’ve hated to play that game without Terrance. Goode and Ty are regressing. I would have been interested to see Dain and Coleman play together in that game and Dain throw his big body on Reese a little bit
Goode is definitely struggling. Now, Ty didn't have his best game even though he was plus 20 on the +/- chart, but to say he is regressing is just plain wrong. He has been fabulous the last several games and the stats are clear on that.

I needed this win today more than anything. It’s been a rough 🍑 week for me. Lost a dear friend last night

My deepest condolences. I dealt with my loss with awkward humor but its never easy.

Please look over my dear friend application I've submitted.

Still outscored 44-36 in lane but a definite improvement from first game. They hung tough down the stretch when it looked like they were going to blow another one. Now go bring home a win at PSU.

I do worry a tad about becoming a team that only plays 6 guys, both for this year and also the fact that 5 of the 6 are gone after this year.

Goode is in a funk, but I really just don't understand why we don't play Dainja more.
Have some of the same worry, which is why early in thread I asked jokingly asked where is that 10-man rotation I read so much about on here in pre-season. Definitely need to get Goode right. I agree about Dain. Definitely has his shortcomings, but seems like there are situations where he’d matchup just fine. Last 5 games, he’s actually close to 20 points per 40 minutes. But that is also about the total number of minutes he’s played in that span.

It is what it is though. Looking like contributions from Hansberry won’t be much what with the back and the lack of playing time as a result of it. And DGL hasn’t shown he’s ready to contribute much during minutes that matter. So we’re at where we’re at. Goode getting good ashain would really help though.

I just don’t understand how a team of Young, Reese, DHS & Donta Scott aren’t winning games in this league 🤷‍♂️
Some nights only two of them end up scoring 90% of the team's points. DHS is a frosh and the game is starting to slow down for him. He'll likely be a beast soon enough. And they're 1-6 in single-possession games this season. They're on the cusp of being 9-6 or 10-5 but just can't get there. Against MSU at home Young squandered three possessions in the final 90 seconds, any one of which would have won the game for them. Their defense keeps them in these games.

Their fans are baying for Willard's blood already. Their petulance and sense of entitlement is pathological. I love it.
