Illinois 95, Iowa 85 Postgame

It's impossible to not feel better after a win compared to after a loss (doubly so against Iowa), so for that I'm thankful.

The offense this team can put up (and tempo) is absolutely incredible. The defense still scares me though and I have zero faith it'll be remedied this season.

To go full wet blanket, I think we only go 2-2 in our last four, with both 1-3 and 3-1 being in play. Any of those scenarios won't really change my outlook for the tournament at this point.

Hit 0-4 or 4-0... Well that'll flip my hopes for March completely around (or technically 90° I think, whatever).

I’m very surprised at the number of people on this post game thread.

I read the last post game thread.

I thought everyone just cashed in their chips and left Illini fandom.

I guess I read that wrong.
Actually, your recollection is correct. Lots of fans "are done with this team (insert team of your choice)" after a bad loss. Then their masochistic tendencies overwhelm and they come back for more.

I have to agree with several people on this. If Hansberry nico Dain and DGL can get a little more tick earlier in these games and even midway through the second half our starters will be a bit more rested come crunch time and it might even mean one or two of these guys coming off the bench help close out games depending on who’s playing well. I still think this team can be destined for great things. We’re a couple terribly sloppy plays and seconds away from being a 22-5 team and had Shannon never been suspended I contend we beat Maryland at home and we’re a 23-4 team. It’s that close! ILL!
I’ve never seen our starters gassed. Not once this season

First of all, props to Fran and Iowa. That was a well-coached team and its offense is really enjoyable to watch. Not hopped about playing in IC in two weeks. Second, what a fun basketball game to watch. Would have enjoyed being in the SFC for it.

Loved the bucket of ice water that BU poured on the starters at the beginning of the 2H. Well-needed. Then was even more delighted to see the subs hold their own and then some.

IMO it's not that Nico or Amani are going to start playing 20 mins per game. They shouldn't and won't. The most heartening thing about the game (aside for the W) was what it showed us we have AT THE MARGIN going into March. Nico will need to prove himself against physical, aggressive (i.e., non-Iowa) D. However, it's really important that he got 17 mins of tick in an intense game with us trailing. It's not an exaggeration to say I'm elated about that. We now clearly have (in addition to Luke, Justin, and Dain) Amani and Nico who can spell the starters and contribute at the margin down the stretch. That seems to me to be THE revelation of the month. That extra depth seems promising for March.

Minnesota at The Barn will be tough. So will the following three. I have no expectations, just want to see gritty, tough, resilient play out of the boys. They do that, March takes care of itself.

Finally: thanks, CoHawk. TikTok will still be there in April.

Keady did it to us in the early 80s. Boilermakers were down by something like 20 points with 10 minutes left in the game. He put in "Mr. Beach" Jim Rowinski and several other bench players. Purdue ended up winning the game on a 20-foot bank shot from Rowinski at the end of the game.
Edit: RIP Mr. Beach

That game was the second time he stuck a fork in us, denying us an outright title. I admired that guy. Arrived at Purdue as a walk-on. Got to BT POY by sheer hard work and determination. Always thought it odd that people mocked him for lifting heavy. Every player should be that strong.

BTW, I was shocked to learn, upon refreshing my memory about him a moment ago, that he passed away three weeks ago at 63. RIP.

We are playing Minny at home, not away.

Funny post about Iowa's longest pass completion of the school year at the end of the first half. However it was incomplete...guy dropped it and then put it up. Which makes you wonder how that is even possible in one second. Apologies if this has already been pointed out.....

Things I noticed about our Defense
1 Hawkins was the most effective when he was on the perimeter. Playing AH and DD helped him not playing post the whole game. Hawkins can play down low but it is not his strength
2 getting them into foul trouble allowed us to play smaller
3 we fought through the screens the best I have seen In awhile
4 still need to do box out drills. We could have gotten 5 more rebounds throughout the game

I would disagree, we ran out of gas and had poor energy which led to bad decisions and loss of focus. Today we looked much fresher at the end. Jmo
Agree. I'm not saying players were dying on the court vs. PSU. I'm just saying I think there was a double benefit to the hockey line change vs. Iowa. Motivational point made plus rest for the starters, leading to better physical and mental decisions at the end of the game.

On the last play of the first half, did you wonder how such a long pass could reach a wide-open Iowa player under the basket? The game video shows Krikke shoving Hansberry away from the basket with both hands as the pass was in the air. Hansberry would have been able to intercept, or at least deflect, the ball otherwise.
Had ANY of the refs been paying attention (as they of course should have done) to the players under the basket (rather than just watching the flight of the ball) Hans would have had a 1-and-1 at the other end (or was Illinois in the bonus+ at that point?), rather than Iowa having an easy 2 point basket.

Wrote it in the game thread. I'll post it again here:

Nico and Harmon were the defibrillator that restarted the heart of this team. We have a pulse again.
It's a common misconception that defibrillators restart hearts. They actually stop hearts from beating by overriding the aberrent electrical impulses causing a heart to beat ineffectively, thereby giving the heart a chance to reset, if you will, and self-restart due to the automaticity of cardiac cells. However, as I am sure that you probably were implying that they provided a needed "jolt of energy" that got the team back on the right track, I wholly agree (figuratively) with your above statement!

Sorry, sometimes I can't help myself and my obnoxious side wins out.

Obnoxious is bad?

Where are NC? I'm in CLT most of the winter. Need a place and friends to watch Illini.

Nico better be practicing his FTs, we may need him in massive moments to sink 2.

He’s not the quickest but we need a go to guy to inbound too late
