New momentum via the Twitter King, Coleman??
Anyway, there seems to be a prevailing sentiment that Nike will have this strong preference to effectively force us to have three "modern" jerseys with their preferred italic font and not just wear refined versions of the throwbacks as our regulars ... but I am not sure I agree with that.
Here are some examples of Nike schools' current home jerseys that do not reinvent the wheel but rather put a modern spin on a classic design specific to the school:
Again, NONE of these are "designated throwbacks" for these teams, even if they are classic in design. All of these schools have additional script or other throwback jerseys they throw into the mix ... it's just that their regular jerseys call back to past designs the school has worn.
I do not think it's unrealistic that we could get the same from Nike ... we are coming off of an Elite Eight and are one of the 10 most financially profitable basketball programs in the country. Nike cares first and foremost about selling these jerseys, and I think if the DIA expresses a desire to get something more classic (like Bret did with football), it's entirely possible we get it.
So here's fingers crossed that we rock the Flyin' Illini design in all three colors as the standard set and then keep the white Script throwbacks and a new orange 2005 throwback next year.
