Edited: There certainly was. They had sit out a year, and lost a year of eligibility too. It was strictly enforced with few exceptions at one time.
Not if a player was released from their NLI, which is what im referring too

Not in the last 10 years
They still had to get a release and there had to be a legitimate reason.

The NLI program was initiated in 1964. While participation and compliance were always technically voluntary, it was strictly enforced for decades.

I would go back to spring signing and scrap the NLI.

If you’re nervous about the number of transfers that will play huge minutes for us this upcoming season, Dawn Staley and South Carolina just showed you can win a championship with an entirely new team from the previous year. It's a new era. Amass talent that can shoot the lights out. Rinse and repeat.

Things will start to unfold this next week. We will have several guys on campus starting on Thursday, and a couple guys will announce they are leaving along with Jase. I expect us to start to get some commitments as early as next weekend or the following week.

Maddox, Hill, Storr, Raynaud, Oweh, Boswell, and a few others are the ones I have my eyes on
What about Brandon Garrison?

Seems like NCAA will deny it. I don't know what happens if you sue NCAA though. Not a lawyer.

I guess you could say John Calipari, for example, showed this as well some years ago but using 5-star incoming freshman at Kentucky.

Of course, the situation is quite different now in men's basketball and apparently Calipari plans to change his approach to roster building.

I'd really like to see Oweh in the mix we take.

Is this insurance for if Boswell drags his feet too long before deciding to enter the portal?
Yes. I also think there are still some debates from the staff on if Boswell is the right fit that they want at pg. A couple of other guys are very interested. He could also still very well stay at AZ-why wait when you can get someone else who is good on board

We need to give recruits/players some grace. They are trying to navigate circumstances caused by COVID, NIL and new transfer rules.

In Illinois case, this year changed some things. It enforced that 4-5,year guys will win games. The BIG tourny, elite 8 finish and top tier offense changed things as well. I will venture to guess NIL dollars increased in the last 4 weeks.

No need to put any players in a bad light, especially when the road map for 99.95% of high school players is to find a level where they will log heavy minutes.

Right now I'm nervous about actually getting these stud transfers. I know there are guys with mutual interest, but mutual interest doesn't mean they're guaranteed to commit to us.

If/when we get some quality guys, then I'll move on the being nervous about cohesion.

Sigh... I'm about done caring, I really am. I tend to think the reason there aren't more kids pursuing engineering degrees while playing power 5 basketball has less to do with kids not wanting an education than it has to do with kids being both that skilled in the maths and sciences as well as physically and athletically gifted are in rather short supply. And you are right, my thoughts are indeed skewed, maybe because I used to tutor Illinois athletes, or perhaps it's that I still despise Jalen Rose and don't really give much credence to the idea that no college athlete cares about anything outside of hookers, blow, and parties. Or that I still hate UNC for making a mockery of college curriculums and fielding a team of athletes who never had to go to classes while fielding a team that dashed our title hopes. Or it could be that outside of the profitable sports like football and basketball you actually see a lot more athletes having actual difficult majors and getting on the dean's lists. But whatever it is, all I know is that while I don't like it, it doesn't really matter anymore. It's where college basketball is at. Be a top 8 player on your team or begone. And you are right, Ingram is an imperfect example. Lieb would probably be a better one. But as I said, once the 4 year eligibility requirement gets struck down by the courts, in I'm guessing within the next 3 years, none of this will matter. Plus who knows, at that point we might just get a few more seasons of Kofi. I could get behind that...
I'm not going to read that. I deem it too long. I have spoken.

then why did we recruit him in the first place? He wasn't some coveted player, we went out of our way to take him. Did he just hide everything and then unleash it when he thought things were safe? Somehow, I doubt that was the case.
To be fair, his profile has risen a lot since he committed. He was probably happy to finally get noticed by a contending power 5 school. Then he had a great senior season. Now he's probably getting better NIL and playing time situations thrown his way and wants to pursue them. Totally understandable, IMO.
Our program has also become a sexier option for transfers than it was when we took Jace's commitment. If the rumors hold true, the bar for playing time here is going to be very high. We may well have an opportunity to bring in someone better if he decommits.
The calculus has changed for both sides in this agreement. We can probably do better, and he can probably find a better situation than either side expected last fall.

Why is Jase considered soft for leaving lol… If I were a solid freshman I’d definitely play at a mid major for a year then up transfer. Sitting for a year is not for everyone
If we have someone who is going to make Jase leave. We are getting really good players
