Just got back from “The Iron Claw”. I thought it was a very good movie and I was surprised to find out it was snubbed by the golden globes with zero nominations. This has been a slow year for me on the movie front, but if this one was skipped over by the GG’s, there must be some phenomenal movies out for 2023.

The plan is to pound out another movie tonight. Probably Maestro.

I was a huge fan of the Dune books when I was younger. I didn't bother once Frank Herbert passed to read any of the son's sequels. This afternoon I saw Dune 2 after re-watching the original last night. Loved both movies! I wish they had stretched them out a bit more though. There was a LOT of stuff to cover, but I get it. Dune Messiah was the 2nd book that follows through with the Paul Atreides arc. Unfortunately there is no current plan in place for a 3rd movie covering that book. My single fault with this 2nd movie was Walken as the Emperor..... disliked his milqtoast portrayal of the most powerful human in existence.

Even with that minor quibble, I'll probably go see it again in the next few days, lol.

Also re-watched Dune1,but haven't had the chance to see Dune2 yet, really looking forward to it.

Ha! Thanks for the shout-out/reminder.

Admittedly I'm slacking this year on my viewing, but feel I've seen enough to have a decent idea.

I'll predict a few of the major categories. I'm admittedly less partial to Oppenheimer, but I'm guessing it does very well tonight.

-Best Picture: Oppenheimer
-Best Director: Christopher Nolan
-Best Actress: Lily Gladstone
-Best Supporting Actress: Danielle Brooks
-Best Actor: Jeffrey Wright (admittedly more more of a personal preference than a prediction. Cillian Murphy will likely win.)
-Best Supporting Actor: Robert Downey Jr.
-Best Documentary: Four Daughters
-Best Animated Feature: Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse
-Costume Design: Barbie
-Cinematography: Oppenheimer
-Adapted Screenplay: Barbie
-Original Screenplay: Anatomy of a Fall
-International Feature: The Zone of Interest
-Original Score: Oppenheimer
-Original Song: What Was I Made For? (Barbie)

I loved Jeffrey Wright in American Fiction as well. If this were any other year, I'd think either him or Paul Giamatti in The Holdovers would win. I still think Da'Vine Joy Randolph wins for Best Supporting Actress.

Feeling similarly about Randolph. Brooks is more my "hope she wins" pick.

I know he was obviously known for other stuff before he was part of the show I'm going to mention but it's been so awesome to see how much success Jon Batiste has had since he left the Late Show.

I think they mentioned during the red carpet that if Billie Eilish and her brother Finneas O'Connell won the best original song Oscar (which they just did) that they'd be the first under the age of 30 to win multiple Oscars in the category.

Already mentioned my thoughts on Best Actor earlier in this thread.

If any of you haven't seen American Fiction or The Holdovers yet, you need to see them when you can. American Fiction in particular was one of the more brilliant films I saw in the past year.

You know what I really like about retirement? I finally had the chance yesterday to alphabetize my huge DVD collection in the closet. Man, does it save time searching for movies, documentaries and stuff. Gonna watch each and every one in alphabetical order. Started with "Atomic Cafe" last night. Great, shocking and funny. Black humor.

I thank the nun when I was in first grade way, way back for my prowess with ABCs.

I'm into procrastination; I retired six years ago.

Too funny! I collect Criterion Collection DVD's and Eclipse box sets. Luckily they are all numbered on the spine and that is how I store them. I have 300-400ish or so of those. It's not alphabetical, and really doesn't help me find anything, lol. But I 'feel' organized for doing it that way..... I have a few dozen other DVD's, DTS releases kept separately. And of course my PS3 games..... And a really small amount of Steelbook Disney releases.... super hard to find anymore. Oh and the complete Combat, original Twilight Zone, Dick Van Dyke Show, an probably others I'm forgetting. Add to all that my mostly Sci-Fi book sets/collections and at 62yo I'm probably good for the duration without spending another dime, hahaha.

Looks amazing! I've not seen Gaga in any of her acting roles outside of clips.... But I do think she will be a better Harley Quinn than Margot Robbie, whom I loved. I just think this take/version of the Joker will be way more in line with how I (prefer to) envision the actual characters.... I liked the Joaquin Phoenix version of The Joker wayyy more than anyone previously. Though Ledger's take was fantastic (no Harley Quinn). I prefer a darker version of the Joker. I just hope they don't go really heavy at all on the singing...... though there is obviously a musical/singing scene in this film.... I'm hoping it's an odd, though delightful, take as it was in the first Phoenix/Joker film's stairway scene, haha. We will see!!

I'm getting so sick of NIL and speculation on other threads and billion$ handed out to college athletes. Creepy.

But speaking of money, why do I have to pay exorbitant fees for cable tv? Nonsequitur, I know.

Sitting here in recliner watching "Death Valley Days" with the Old Ranger (Stanley Andrews). Free in the mid-50s when I was a kid. (Not true: parents had to buy a 12-inch B&W television and an antenna! And the brave tv repairman who risked electrocution replacing those tubes. A profile in courage JFK did not mention in his book).

Now I pay through the nose to Xfinity to watch tv shows we saw virtually free way back when I was a kid. I just don't understand.

Just so my post is relevant to this thread, I also watched "Bad Day at Black Rock" earlier. Big box office hit. Spencer Tracy, Robert Ryan, Lee Marvin, Dean Jagger ...

And now Rory Calhoun in "The Texan"!
