The NCAA's track record on determining what's allowable is so bad that I don't believe anything the NCAA says about regulating athlete pay. Who gets to determine what a valid business purpose is? Who decides what's "true NIL" or "fair market value"? How is the NCAA going to step in to stop deals they don't like? Without knowing any details, I'm skeptical that this is another attempt to insert themselves in ways that won't make sense or even hold up when challenged legally. Will have to see what they come up with.

FWLIW, I think the conferences would have better luck coming up with guidelines that are appropriate for the level of competition in their conference and the reputational concerns their members may have. A central org like the NCAA with it's history of fighting athlete pay seems like a recipe for failure.

Under what legal concept? That the university has a constitutional obligation to provide athletic opportunities to students? On one hand, you can sue anyone for anything . . . that doesn't mean you will prevail.
Well for sure... I never said that anyone would prevail or win any lawsuit... I merely said that the number of lawsuits would increase...

Agree. I don't believe a word of what I copied above from the article is enforceable, either legally or practically. I like the Shaq gif but perhaps this would have been better

I don’t even know where the discussion is supposed to go anymore on specific threads. But HOF Illini David Williams was asked about the current rules. His exact words were, “I hate it.” “It’s ruining college sports.” He went on to say if the current rules were in place when he played he never would have made it. It discourages hard work for instant gratification.

For sure it's a big change. I guess a lot depends on how people view the way Universities try to max out revenue.

The obvious solution here is multi-year contracts and protections for school and player alike. You can stop the transfer phenomenon only if you make an effort to keep players where they are. And no, I don't mean going back to the old system where we find archaic means of making transferring hard.

Right now, the system we have now, is the worst it can get. Just full on mercenaries. Collectives have to continually pony up market value dollars every year to new players. So this is just one step of that change.
