How many times have we heard the cliché that teams that are not fundamentally sound have poor coaching. Clichés are clichés because they are usually true. The Cubs are a fundamentally unsound team.

If the Cubs don't pitch a 1-hit shutout they have no chance of winning. I suppose Counsell is to blame that Jed gave him no closer.

He had Alzolay who did well in the role last season and went out and got Neris who has previous closing experience. When players don't play to their potential, it's not all on the front office.

Alzolay was never the long-term answer in the closer role. They needed to upgrade coming into this season. If Neris is supposed to be the closer, case closed.

Why? He has experience (5 shy of 100 career saves) and, compared to most of our bullpen, has a decent ERA this year. He's only given up 3 ER in his last 15 innings (1.80 ERA).

It is his control (too many walks) that has been an issue so far, but I'd prefer that to the long ball that has plagued most of our relievers.

Catchers still can't hit a lick.....Morel still can't be batting cleanup.....and Hendricks is still really bad.
I'm sure glad Shota got those 10 days rest.

I am beginning to question Counsel. When you have a pitcher in a groove, you sit him for 10 days? I understand wanting to limit his innings, so give him an extra day or two because of the rainout, don't just skip him in the rotation. We'll see how he bounces back.

As to Hendricks, I have a Hendricks jersey and it hurts, but he needs to go.

He gets to 10 years service time (full pension) in about 3 weeks. Out of respect, I think they're letting him hang on until then.
