Welcome to the mascot debate/fandom thread.
Where in the H did that come from? If that site is legit it almost feels like another fanbase pranked them (and us) with Illinois 'mascot' info.Lou the Flying Illini | Mascot Hall of Fame

Huh?
And of course if we could bring back the Chief, and stop catering to the woke minority, that would be another step in the right direction...but alas.
I don’t think people think Chief is ever coming back. However Chief was interwoven into our game day experience. 3 and one song selection. Since the removal the fan experience and atmosphere at both basketball and football has gone down. Not sure what caused the change. The Chief does not need to come back. And this isn't a "woke minority" (whatever that means) opinion. People seriously need to get over the Chief not being around. It's been gone long enough now that there's no need to bring it back.
I also think the arched ‘ILLINI’ is the closet thing we have to a semblance of the chief’s headdress without screaming chief. I think enough time has elapsed with the anti chief period that we can play on the chief theme without causing great throwback. Remember the old logo that had the word ILLINI forming the chief’s headdress from the side profile? In logo design, you want to find something you have that is unique and distinctive and build on that.
I always thought the word “Illini” had potential because it’s almost entirely vertical sticks.
ILLINI is pretty close to IIIII\II
I always thought there must be a way to take all that straight line verticality and stylize it into something that would pop visually.
The arched Illini logo emphasizes those up-down lines which is why I think it’s the best of all of them from an aesthetic viewpoint.

What if instead of the slant Illinois we made it like the Chiefs headdress? I think it’s past time for all the anti Chief people that we can start playing around with logos that have a little bit of a Chief image without showing his face. We could even use the ILLINI here instead of just Illinois for a headdress. There’s lots of potential here even with not using the Chiefs face.I think having the letters not outlined in blue really helps. The blue outline kind of muted the helmet, when combined with an ancient 2005 Nike template, really made us look like we had a stale look during the post-Rose Bowl years. Better jerseys and a white-only Illinois really pops and is a much better look than what we had circa 2012.
The NCAA is basically gone why not try it?What if instead of the slant Illinois we made it like the Chiefs headdress? Can we make galloping ghosts the school mascot?
Either a ghostly horse alone, a ghostly horse and ghost rider, or just a grey ghost like old-timey football player.
All great options!
One thing I have thought about over all these years is what we could do that fans would actually buy into and rally around and that the administration would support and I am somewhat in the same mindset as you. If we were to go in that direction, I would also lean heavily on the "Fighting Illini" and "Memorial Stadium". Maybe in the pregame or halftime as part of the 3 in 1, start pouring down smoke, silence the crowd, and strike the bell, and out from the smoke steps out selected students dressed as our greatest players and figures as they were in their playing days. Red Grange, Dick Butkus, Papa Bear Halas, Ray Nitschke, Jim Grabowski, Simeon Rice, Jeff George, etc. and make some sort of pageantry of it whether it be a presentation of trophies or championships they won (yes that does sound ostentatious), or leading us in Loyalty. And also have a special honor that day for one of them where similar to the Red Grange run you have a fan challenge them between quarters (imagine for Butkus, a fan and the Butkus impersonator in those inflatable balls and the fan has to get past Butkus in 10yds for the first down. Fans would devour that). Can we make galloping ghosts the school mascot?
