Great win. It felt like the Illini were in control the whole way. They weathered the MSU throw-everything-at-them start to the third quarter, and kept game control. Timely third down conversions. Timely QB sacks. Timely chunk plays.

Play like this on the road next week and I think it will be another good day.

Satisfying program win. Way to cap the home schedule and create a bunch of awesome "best of" stats.

1. I'll share my favorite, underrated stat: First time that Illinois has beaten Michigan and Michigan State in the same season since 1983.
2. Special teams were a deciding factor. Beatty is the best Illinois punt returner in a very long time. Pinton doing an excellent job of flipping fields. Discher deserves a raise.
3. MSU's pass rush stinks but was a good bounce back game for the offensive line. Crisler, Kreutz, Davis, Henderson all put up excellent PFF pass blocking scores.
4. Pat Bryant passed Malik Turner today to move into the top-10 for career receiving yards at Illinois. He could make it to 9th, but it would take a story-book ending to pass Walter Young at #8.
5. Defense took a meaningful step forward today. No Rosiek. No Scott for first half. Tough showing in past two games with some obvious strategic issues. Lack of turnovers is still glaring but the run defense was promising with the concerns all season at LB and the best player in that unit now out for the season.
6. Younger backups showing out on defense: Malachi Hood, Jaheim Clarke, Mac Resetich
7. That Bielema challenge in the first half is a real head scratcher. You have to be absolutely certain to challenge a play that didn't even result in a first down. Just such a befuddling choice.
8. Lunney play calling and offensive line getting destroyed for those 2.5 possessions in the third quarter was ugly business. Franklin was limping around that time, which is a "what's the primer to get the offense moving when in a rut if Franklin isn't available?".
9. Loved the running back rotation, and was surprised to see complaints on here about it. MSU can't rush the passer, so there aren't concerns about getting Valentine more involved. I liked the early doses of Valentine/Laughery (McCray if you needed to grind out a short-yardage situation) and McCray coming on for the second half.
10. Was happy with Altmyer's performance, but a little disappointed it wasn't more efficient with MSU missing multiple starting secondary pieces.

NOW I think we could actually beat Rutgers - even though a Noo Joisey school doesn't belong in the Big Ten! šŸ˜†

I read somewhere we might face Missouri in a bowl. I HATE the Tigers. They always embarrass us. But...maybe this year will be different. Keeping the faith.

Well done, coach and players!!!

Werner: "Fabrizio Pinton replaced senior Hugh Robertson as the starting punter for non-injury reasons — and the junior executed well. Pinton, who entered the transfer portal last offseason only to return to Illinois, had four punts for 189 yards and pinned Michigan State inside the 15 twice. Robertson did punt once for 36 yards, pinning MSU at their own 15."
The dude who single-handedly beat Iowa two years ago?!?!?!?!?!?!?

Where is the 6-6 season that someone in here was predicting?

He isn’t one of the headliners, but I appreciate Hank Beatty catching and returning all 6 punts by MSU. He took some heavy hits, but he gave his team decent to good field position all day. Not having to start drives inside their own 20 is important for this Illini offense.
How many yards did he rack up. Huevos mas grande on that guy for not settling for a fair catch.

To be fair, they punted it 25 yards further than any of the guys on their punt team. The one time they were close enough to stop him early enough, they ran into him before he even had the ball.

Still, Beatty had a great day returning, and I don’t want to take anything away from that!

I thought RB room played a really good game. For run defense just attacked downhill, even if didn’t make the tackle rb had to adjust and messed up play. Better than waiting and getting caught behind lineman.
Coverage with hood and meed looked good.
