Hopefully he's on the Mike Norvell path.
Norvell going downhill is more of a ski jump than a path.

So Indiana football locks in coach at 8 million per year. Wow, i guess he has black mail on executive staff. 😆 🤣 😂

I wasn't trying to use statues as a metric. And, great points about Leipold and maybe Tucker.
What I was poorly trying to say is, it doesn't take as much to be loved in Bloomington as it does in let's say, Baton Rouge. I think he COULD absorb a sub par season and survive and thrive. And thus be the best ever in Bloomington.
However, if he did leave for Baton Rouge. He may never lose there.

Ball State has fired head coach Mike Neu. Neu was 40-63 in nine seasons in Muncie and was 3-7 this season. He only ever had one winning season in charge of the Cardinals and that was in 2020 when they also won the MAC title. Neu played at Ball State in the early '90s but his lack of results as a head coach led to his dismissal.

He might be on the Lance Leipold at Kansas path. Complete program turnaround, HUGE big money extensions, and then disappointment after the transfers/prvs coach's recruits graduate. The quick, overvalued contract extension also has shades of Mel Tucker.
You mean the Bret Bielema path at Illinois? BB got Illinois to 8-5 (5-4) and then we slipped back to 5-7 (3-6). Liepold got Kansas to 9-4 (5-4) and now they’ve slipped back to 4-6 (3-4) thus far this season. But he just beat two top 20 teams in a row.

Mel Tucker did essentially the same thing, though got the Spartans to an even higher level (though they hadn’t sunk to the prolonged depths the other two programs had). He went 11-2 (7-2) and then slid back to 5-7 (3-6). MSU was 2-0 when Tucker got suspended and then fired. Would they have had same collapse if they hadn’t had to deal with the coaching change after 2 games? Maybe, maybe not.

Lance got extension of 7 years/$35 million. I believe Bret is up to $6M per year plus incentives/retention bonus. Tucker’s extension was bigger (and yes crazy), but he got his team to greater height during season that earned him extension. Plus I think they saw a possible return to 6 year run they had from 2010-2015. Neither Kansas nor Illinois had that kind of run as recently. Cignetti’s contract extension is huge but like Tucker he has taken his team to greater height than Lance or Bret thus far.

It’s tough to build a program, especially a moribund one. You find a coach who breathes some success into the program, and you damn sure do what is needed to retain him. Doesn’t always work out, but the alternative is to save a few million while potentially replacing your HC every few years.

Temple has fired Sean Drayton after two-plus seasons in charge of the Owls. They defeated FAU in OT yesterday to improve to 3-7 this season. They were 9-25 overall and 4-18 in the AAC with Drayton in charge. Temple is in the midst of their 5th straight losing seasons after going 81-59 under 5 different coaches the previous 10 seasons.

Air Raid/pass heavy schemes are just kinda sketch right now. Most teams having success right now are about as versatile as possible, with the exception of some outliers like Miami(arguably the best QB in cfb) and the Academies.

Theres a few exceptions out there, but the problem with wide open offenses can be the defense suffering.

Wisconsin should’ve stayed with their identity as a smash mouth team.

Going back to lessons learned watching coaching hires - my lesson from UM hiring RichRod was (a) it's really hard to go from one philosophical extreme to another. (b) but if you do, you need to preach lots of patience and have a great plan to smooth out the rough transition that is unavoidable.

I think any coordinator worth his salary can adapt his offense to any personnel.

not many statues of coaches without a national championship. The question is can he do it at IU.

if he leaves it won’t be for money. It will be for a better chance to win a title and lots of money.

That’s what Mackovic said. Left for Texas because they had a better chance to win a natty, but things didn’t go as planned.

Brian Kelly has the tigers at 6-4. A lot thought he was one of the best in the business, and had reached the ceiling at notre dame. If I’m cigs I’d stay at Indiana. He’s gotta have someone tie him to the mast so he doesn’t fall victim to the sirens’ song

But what’s the likelihood Indiana is ever 10-0 again? Or even sniffing the playoff again? They lose a lot of guys. Regardless of coach, they’re my #1 candidate for next season’s Florida state. Maybe not as bad, but I’ll bet around .500 next year, like Michigan.
