In this house we believe a swingy and vibes-based AP Poll is good.
Gotta prove it against one of the tougher non-con opponents. I think the Illini will do that at some point in the next month.
Arizona still ranked
I understand that sportswriters vote in the AP poll, and that many of them don't follow all of the teams all that closely. And I understand the Illini dropping out after the loss to Alabama. However, I am having trouble understanding how Arizona remained in the Top 25. They have beaten no one of note and have gotten blown out by Wisconsin and Duke. The only way in which that differs from the Illini to date is that Arizona has played two good teams and lost to both by large margins...while the Illini have done that only once.

The biggest surprise in this week's poll (in my opinion) is Creighton still being ranked.

Wasn’t expecting them to be ranked this week. Just need to take care of business and they’ll be fine.
They didn’t “punish” Alabama for beating us by 13. Two undefeated teams were elevated over them.

It wasn't exactly a tough loss. They lead pretty much wire to wire and got down by almost 20. We did cut it to 8, but were never really a threat. Letting up a C note, regardless of how good Bama's offense is, isn't a great look either.
We were ranked on the merits of our coach, but nothing that we've done in games.
We have games coming up to prove that we belong.
Because outside of Alabama, we haven't beaten any team with a pulse. UALR is a small step up in competition tonight, but then we're off the the races with a meatier part of the schedule. If we do some good things there, we'll be back. Can't lose by double digits in our only true test of the season and not expect to drop a few notches.

There is a nostalgia to it that I appreciate. And on that note, win two this week and we'll be up near the top 20 whether we deserve it or not!
The simplest explanation is that other teams also played games.
Illini2010-11

Early season volatility is the best explanation for major change in week to week polls, especially in the month of November. Alabama lost one spot because Tennessee jumped them (they blitzed Virginia and Baylor in the Bahamas). It is completely reasonable to me for Bama to drop one spot (the voters can't forget that Bama got destroyed against Purdue the week before, who subsequently got taken to the woodshed by Marquette). Illinois dropped six spots because there are some major question marks about the team going into the season and even now. If Illinois handles business this week, then they will likely be right back around the top 25.
Creighton looked like crap at home against a weak plodding Nebraska team.
