AP Poll - #19 would be my prediction.

Jump Tulane, TAMU, Clemson. Have no clue why UNLV is ranked higher but think that'll stay (until next week when they play boise state).

I don't see Clemson dropping that far. #20 will be our spot.

I think next week you root for Boise State (to knock UNLV below us) and SMU (to guarantee Clemson is below us if they aren't this week).
Loser of Arizona State/IASU falls below us, but I wouldn't doubt if the winner of Tulane/Army jumps us. So those games are a wash.

I think we're #20 this week with a peak of #18 heading into the bowl. I'm ecstatic about that, yet somehow disappointed too. Being an Illini fan can cause one to experience every emotion possible over every possible thing at any possible moment.

Agreed about UNLV. Just ridiculous these low conference teams and their scheduling. And how squeaking by 2 win teams in their ridiculous conference gets you top spots in rankings.

really ?

in a season we were supposed to win 5 ?
we are a good team , but hardly a real good team . we won two games in ot ( one by a miracle finish in reg) and won another game in reg on a miracle .

the football gods smiled on us this year in many respects , after many years of not doing so .

I’m 100% happy with our ranking . imo, we are a tad over ranked

Stat wise we are way overrated. However, wins and losses are what matter. The point is not only did we overachieve by a lot, we also got lucky / pulled out the close games we almost never did in the past. Just an incredible season - one of the best in many decades.

In the postgame video, Luke attributed the team’s exceptional success to their unity, despite not being the most talented players. Congratulations, Illini, on your amazing season. And you’re not done yet! #FamILLy

Massey composite has Illinois 26th. https://masseyratings.com/ranks?s=cf

So 21st seems mostly reasonable. They've played a tough schedule and beat a lot of solid teams, but haven't really got a signature win and have rarely dominated an opponent, even one as bad as Purdue. The Michigan win is probably the best one overall.

All that matters is that the Illini will be ranked in top 25 going into bowl season. It looks so much better in a bowl game to have a small number to the left of the name.

What is kind of interesting is that the last time Illinois went 9-3 they were ranked 13 going into the Rose Bowl. Marquis wins make a huge difference in polls (Illinois had 3 big wins that season: PSU, Wisc, and OSU). Illinois had many ranked wins this year, but none of those teams finished with more than 7 wins. So #21 seems about right to me, and likely right around #19 or 20 next week.

Really big bummer to think what might’ve been had this team held it together in the 4th quarter against Minnesota
This is one way to think about it. There is also the other side to the coin.

We were a few plays away from 5 wins if not for the miracle against Rutgers, OT blitz against Nebraska, ending vs Kansas, and FG plus two point sack to avoid a horrific loss vs PU. This has been an exceptional season even if we seemed to be just a few plays short of a playoff berth.

Very true. The what if slices both ways just as easily.

It cuts immeasurably easier on the "more losses" side.

I know it's just the nature of fan psychology but it really blows my mind how straight-facedly so many people are believing we could have or should have even MORE from our total ridiculous miracle of a record that colossally overstates how good we actually are.

We could have won the Minny game, I agree.

We had absolutely no business in the universe winning Purdue or Rutgers. Pure lightning bolt of dumb luck gifts from the football gods. Twice.

I agree. College football games are hard to win. Often times, more goes wrong than goes right.

The fact that we’re looking back on this season with only one loss that could have been a win, while winning every other close game is incredible.

That’s a testament to this program, coaching staff, and players.
