As someone who works nights all I care about is 0 weeknight games.
Yeah this is right. Big Ten offenses suck and defenses are great so the numbers are never going to look like Big 12 numbers. Plus he's not on a team that can just out-talent the other team like OSU and Oregon. For a middle of the pack Big Ten team, Altmyer is about as good as it gets. For those criticizing Luke's stats this year - he is the 6th highest rated QB in the B1G this year behind Rourke at Indinia, Howard at tOSU, Allar at PSU, Dillon (Heisman candidate) at Oregon, and Rogers at Washington, and only Gabriel has a better TD/INT ratio. He's arguably the best QB1 we've had at Illinois since Kurt Kittner, and Kittner's last season was in 2001. BTW, Kittner is 44 now if you wanted to be reminded that you're old![]()
Do you think Luke's ceiling is higher than Devito's? I never would have guessed that Tommy would have started multiple NFL games when he played for us. I think Luke has the higher ceiling of the two - I think we undervalue Luke.Yeah this is right. I can't speak for the pros but Luke is a better college qb than Devito. For most of this season we had no running game. In 2022 the passing game was sort of an extension of the running game. 2022 had lower yards per attempt and lower attempted yards per attempt. Devito just had a worse passer rating as well. We are definitely big game hunting this season and using Altmyer to try and get big chunks. It was different in 2022 where we had a very conservative offense because our defense was so good. Add in the fact that Altmyer is way better runner than Devito and I don't think the comparison is particularly close as a college qb.Do you think Luke's ceiling is higher than Devito's? We may be middle-of-the-pack but if we had a decent OL, we might have a higher ceiling than we can envision. Luke could totally elevate us to that next step.
Yeah kind of cyclical with the fact that you're going to be more accurate on shorter routes as well. Another thing to consider is the Illini offense is also just way better this season even though we mostly haven't been able to run the ball. We were 99th! in 2022 even with Chase Brown and we are 54th this season in SP+. Lot of that is the gulf in qb play. A huge difference is we've been so much better in the red zone this season than 2022, which I think has been a credit to Luke as well.DeVito's rating was lower paetially because he didn't push the ball down the field a lot(conservative yds per attempt leads to a lower rating).
DeVito is the most accurate QB Illinois has had in decades(i thought most accurate but not 100% sure). Luke throws a beautiful mid to deep ball. Barry is playing to their strengths as much as he can, and deserves some credit for that even if our offense could still be a lot better.

Because of course.Welp, for those hoping we wouldn't face an ascending Duke. They go their guy
