We were at that game. Beautiful day, one of the most embarrassing losses I ever witnessed in person. The way it turned out had Illinois been able to beat UCLA convincingly they might have ended up #3 behind Miami & Nebraska. They had an outside chance of leapfrogging Nebraska, as well, but that would have been a long shot. They entered the Rose Bowl ranked #4. And as it was they ended up dropping to #10 in the final poll.
I was there in my orange painter’s pants 😳

Come on, you need some sympathy for LSU fans. When their full comprehensible vocabulary consists of two words, they're going to use those words A LOT.

Just took time to re watch Northwestern game. I sure hope some of our defense doesn't go elsewhere or draft. Could be very special next year with some added pieces.

Anyone who attended this game knows it was about 35 degrees and raining on New Year's Day. We were walking past the motor home lot near the Super Dome and we were toting our Illini umbrella as it was raining hard and steady. As we walked past a group of the LSU people standing next to a motor home on our way to the Quarter one in the group yelled THANKS FOR BRINGING THE !!!!!! WEATHER DOWN HERE WITH YOU!! This was before the game but I'd had enough by that time so we stopped and I turned towards them and said something to the effect IF THE BIG 10, IN THEIR INFINITE WISDOM, HADN'T GIVEN AWAY THE ROSE BOWL WE'D BE IN PASADENA WHERE IT'S 80 DEGREES INSTEAD OF THIS !!!! HOLE!! Surprising enough they didn't have much of a retort and I felt a bit vindicated after being screamed at for 2 days!!
I'm sure the LSU people were insufferable but that's a pretty hilarious burn on their part. I'll never not be mad about losing out on the Rose Bowl that year, although I guess 2007 made up for it somewhat.

The reference to '07 is a valid point.

I wasn't there, but friends went and stayed at a hotel filled with Illini fans. I don't remember if it was the night before or of the game, but apparently a bunch of drunken LSU fans started peeing in the swimming pool chanting, "Tiger Juice, Tiger Juice," before running away.

Bands put in a crazy amount of time and effort and are a big part of the gameday experience. I'm really happy to see the Marching Illini will be there for the game.
My son, daughter-in-law and son-in-law all marched in a Big Ten band. Lots of work, lots of fun, lots of time, and lots of memories. I did get to see my son march at Memorial Stadium one time - which was special. It was a great day (and Illinois beat Purdue!).

Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? South Carolina is heavily favored - nobody expects us to win.

We are playing South Carolina - not Alabama, Georgia, or Tennessee. They have had a couple good seasons under Lou Holtz and Steve Spurrier but in general are middling ACC, independent and now SEC member.

With exception of Penn State and Oregon game we have played just well enough to win. Not really blowing anybody out in B10 or P5. Lets do it again vs SC!
