I get it, but from my experience, my bond with the Illini want built in opposing arenas. It was built at Assembly and Memorial. I live in Chicagoland now, but my bond with with the STL Cardinals wasn’t built at Wrigley. It was built living down there and going to Busch as a youngster.
If your son wasn’t impressed by the turnout and love shown by Illini fans in an opposing gym then maybe he just isn’t that into it and that is totally ok.
Fair points.

He was impressed, and he expected a win. We had won ten in a row at Northwestern before our current (and ongoing) three game losing streak.

My general point wasn't to account for the arc of his (or my) personal fandom, but rather to point out the huge opportunity to bolster the enthusiasm of a generation of kids who are being exposed to Illinois basketball by their Chicago-area parents taking them the NW games, and how it seems like we're really squandering than opportunity as a program.

He just doesn't want to keep getting excited about going to games and then experiencing bad losses in games that we should win. He's cried at every single NCAA tournament loss since he was old enough to understand the concept. He's just really sad and disappointed that even such strong fan support at NW is apparently not enough for us to manage to win in Evanston. That's the point he (and I) were making because of the unique opportunity that those Northwestern games present.

So Wisconsin was favored in Champaign by 2.5 and now #1 Tennessee is favored by only 1.5.

First of all --- Wisky should never have been favored in our house. Vegas is slipping.
Last game the announcers mentioned the vols were only 7 deep because of injuries. I wonder if someone else isn’t playing today for them. A starter perhaps. 🤔

Where are you getting those betting lines? Wisconsin was never favored anywhere I could see.

Just your friendly reminder that Vegas bookmakers don’t set the line based on what they think the final spread will be. They set it based on what they think the bettors think the final spread will be. Wisconsin was ranked, Illinois was not. Now those of us who follow the B1G closely knew that Illinois was likely the better team. But your common gambler did not.

My best friend who is a huge, huge Bears fan took his young son to a Bears game against the Packers, but they lived in Sheyboygan, so opted to attend his son's first game at Lambeau that year instead.

His son is a Packers fan now lol.
I can't stop thinking about this. F'n diabolical! The devil was definitely at work that day.

Ok, so you're saying that going to a road game didn't have as many Illinois fans as a home game would, so the experience wasn't as rosey for the road team? This shouldn't be a surprise and if that was a concern, you should have held off on his first experiences.

I was at the game and there were a TON of Illinois fans. It was probably 40% of the stadium. The "issue" is that the Northwestern students were loud and did a great job, which is what a good student section does. The Illinois fans at the game were ones that can afford it. The tickets were expensive on the secondary market and the place only holds 7,000 people.

Also, when we were up, our fans were up and did provide the atmosphere that you speak of. However, we took a leak down our legs from the last 8 minutes thru overtime. That was a downer, but it happens on the road.

Take the ride down to Champaign to have him get the real experience of the fandom because I'm guessing that a dad who's indoctrinating his kid into Tennessee athletics isn't expecting the same jolt when coming into town today.

This one is on you dad, not the fandom. Take the three hour drive for the experience you're looking for.

What an epic day it would be to surprise us with these (and presumably make Tennessee wear white or black).

I think the line is a result of people generally not being convinced that Tennessee is number one. A good team obviously, but they've kinda defaulted to the spot as opposed to earning it.

I do think them being underdogs is bulletin board material. If they are truly a top 5 team they're going to be psyched to demonstrate it.

So what do we tell Kwa Jones? Is he getting paid more at the moment to be assistant coach? We just demote him back down?
I’m sure he knew that we going to hire an experienced assistant in the offseason when he got the promotion(heck I knew BU was going looking to make hire in offseason). He should be thankful for the experience he’s getting then go to lesser position once BU makes the hire in offseason

There's interest on both sides ...
I had penciled in the Bama assistant - Preston Murphy. He was heavily mentioned during the last coaching hiring/firing cycle...almost sounded like a done deal for next offseason. Did anything change there or did I misinterpret how people close to the program were feeling?
