Completely agree. I was a freshman in ‘01 as well. I believe Tom Ward was our starter out the gate in ‘02 and then Beutjer won the job during the season. I was at that OSU game…incredible environment. So, for me it was going into 2002. 2001 was my freshman year and what a fun year that was. Still had B Lloyd and Walter Young, Beutjer looked like a great guy for Kittner to hand the reigns over to. Defense still looked like it had a lot of promise. I thought the good times were going to last. And even in our defeats I thought there was promise. That OT loss to OSU with Gockman hitting that seemingly miracle field goal that seemed to go forever to float over the bar to tie it is still my most memorable Illini football moment as a student. I had no idea what was to come, and even if you told me, I wouldn't have believed it. I thought great things were on the horizon. But sometimes that horizon is a bit further off than you think, maybe even 20+ years...
1982.A general question for those on this thread: when's the most recent time you were this satisfied about the state and and optimistic about the trajectory of the football program?
For me: 1990, and it was unfounded. I was 24 and had ~ 1% of the information I have access to now through all of you here (and particularly our beloved Insiders) so that '90 optimism was a stab in the dark. Today, I feel pretty good. This seems stable. Waited ~ 35 subsequent years to get here.

Maybe they are just entering a transitional period?NCAA’s power seems to be pretty much gone.
i dont think so. the NIL will still exist, law suits are piling in. now that we've gone down this road there is no turning back. This type of thing comes to an end when programs can pay players directly, right? B1G and SEC should have a much larger pocketbook to play with at that point.
Nothing like a 25 year old freshman…..Aussie kicker rule states they must be at least 25 when they come over
I like this, but why would he come to Illinois to be a backup?

Interesting take on the JUCO fiasco .
Just to clarify, it's a preliminary injunction, in one case. There's no final ruling on Pavia's case yet, and the ruling only applies to him. Theoretically other JUCOs would need to sue and get similar injunctions (though the NCAA could voluntarily restrain itself from enforcing the eligibility rules until Pavias case plays out).
Good for him.....good for us!He wants to come in and compete … Close to home …
There was one judge that gave a preliminary injunction to allow one player not to have to use time at JUCO against eligibility. Edit… beat me to it.It’s true. JUCO years no longer go against their eligibility years
Here’s hoping if we need him, he’s our John Paddock.
