I just remember how many people on hear were so against him being hired . It was a lot .

Bret was hardly well liked in Illiniland
I was one of them - delighted to acknowledge how wrong I was.

One overlooked element in the whole dramatic exchange is that Beamer was the first coach out to the field to swat Clarke on the butt as he was dazed on the ground.

Under other circumstances, I'd give an opposing coach the benefit of the doubt and assume that they were saying something supportive (or at least generically inoffensive and neutral), but I suspect that it was a markedly different message in this case. If so, that could have been what prompted BB to raise the agitation stakes.

Gamecocks were 9.5 point favorite.

I think that might very well have been the most physical Illini team I've seen in a very long time. Both defensively and offensively we brought out the hit sticks.
I thought both teams were popping pads. There was no question both teams wanted to be there and wanted to win. Then it only got hotter in the second half. Loved every hit and every minute.

I look forward to reading the postgame thread and all of your marvelous comments.

That will have to wait, however, until I spend the evening collecting and melting down all of the graven images I can find in my neighborhood, and then casting an enormous statue of Bret Bielema.

10-3. Pinch me. Violently.

Looking back I also think SC's gameplan of playing slow on offense was a mistake. The announcers mentioned when Illinois was catching cramps (may or may not have been real) the difference in climate. There's no way Illinois was truly acclimated so the slower tempo played significantly to their favor.

What a masterful performance! It was in my backyard (59 miles away but I couldn't go because of chemo treatments and a weakened immune system.) But the defense contained them, not breaking down and making them travel the entire field to score. The offense did just enough to control the tempo and refused to get rattled. And Bielema and company outcoached their coaches in almost every phase. I think I'll stay up all night and watch the game over and over...

GO ILLINI!!!! never been more proud!
