Like I said, I don’t follow basketball, so have no idea who you’re talking about. And not my call!

However, you’ll struggle to find any expert on leadership who doesn’t regard nepotism as a destructive influence on organizational performance. Maybe this guy’s contributions are truly exceptional, but that’s generally not what you find. Brian Ferentz was a sports example of the problems. How do you expect someone to objectively assess/discipline (or fire) family?

Don't feel bad. I've met no one. But, I'd probably would have no idea if I had.

Closest would be Densie Stapley. A winner from the show, Survivor. But I also had no idea until my kids told me who she was.
Sound like me in that I rarely recognize people and if I do, it’s at the last second. Not that I’d say anything anyway. Only ones I can think of outside of those I met through work are James Woods — he was getting out of elevator at Sun-Times building when I was getting on. Think he might have been there shooting some interiors as it was about the time he would have been shooting some movie with Dolly Parton. Also saw the actress who played Nina on All My Children on street in Chicago late at night. Think she was in town for a play.

Worked in book publishing for awhile and met several sports figures, but mostly on the phone. Did stay two nights at Hank Steam’s house going over galley changes. Also had an in-person meeting with QB Doug Williams.

I rode up an elevator in St. Louis with Ozzie Smith.

I got my picture taken when Lon Kruger when he coached the Illini and came to watch a player at the high school I graduated from.

But my favorite was drinking with the late Mike Shannon and his wife at a bar in Quincy. We spent several hours drinking and he told so many awesome stories about his time as a MLB player. It was me, my wife, Mike and his wife and my step daughter and her fiancé (now husband). The others didn't appreciate the experience like I did having grown up listening to him on the radio and being a huge Cardinals fan.

Football is about the only spectator sport that holds my interest, maybe due to the many moving parts, variety of skill sets, and strategic complexity. Plus good memories from Memorial Stadium as a student in the ‘70’s. I’ve no interest in baseball or basketball at any level. Wife and I are avid cyclists year ‘round, so we watch the Pro Tour. I used to be an avid alpine skier and whitewater kayaker, but those aren’t spectator sports. She’s a Chiefs fan but also an Illini by marriage.

That's because the FSU Seminoles pay a royalty to the Florida tribe, and they aren't biting the hand that feeds them. However, the Oklahoma tribe don't receive anything, and they aren't happy. Illinois should have made some kind of a deal with the Peoria tribe so they would have had an interest in keeping the Chief. Of course, it didn't help the Illinois cause by having the Sioux make the Chief's clothes.
The Council of Chiefs approached them when Phyllis was chancellor and came up with a plan to have a Native American portray the Chief, no dancing, and suggested that all students (or maybe it was athletes only?) take a Native American studies course. She nixed it and that was that

Back to random celebrity encounters - shared a 2-seat row on a flight out of Tampa in the early 80s with Randy Owen. I had no clue about country music at the time, so it meant nothing when he told me the name of his band. Resonated only because my father was born in Alabama. My musical ignorance notwithstanding, we shared a pleasant 2 hours of conversation in route to IND.

It was the official title for the group of students who portrayed Chief Illiniwek on campus when I was there in the mid-2000s. They're still around and arranged for a Chief appearance before the MS rededication game this year.

Sometimes wiki isn't the end all be all. This wasn't that hard to find using the right keywords on Google. It's in the third question on the FAQ.

If the raiders draft his son, who is not going to be a good nfl qb, then hire Deion as hc, you can count in the raiders to suck in the foreseeable future. Pierce may be the only coach in history to fail at the HS level (at Long Beach Poly), then fail forward to an NFL gig and (surprisingly) not succeed there either. As a result of that I wouldn’t put it past the raiders to go for prime and son.

I will say the Colorado ship sailed further than I thought it would this season, but in hindsight the ship was still leaky just not catastrophically so. I’ll stand by my nfl prediction for the sanders, which is it won’t work out well.

Any new coach they hire should consider it a rebuild. Unless it’s Bienemy, then CU is in trouble for a while. I see a whole lotta Lovie in Eric b

That is helpful, thank you. But I think a comparison was being made with the Seminole Indians, who are a federally recognized tribe with over 18,000 active members enrolled. Alas, I used wikipedia again for that number.

My phrasing in my original post wasn't clear enough.

The Council of Chiefs met with representation of the Peoria Tribe to come up with a plan to allow the university to use the Chief, similar to what FSU has. They came up with what I outlined. Phyllis Wise, who was UIUC's chancellor at the time, refused the plan, effectively killing it.

Don't ya love it when our administrators and professors actively work against our traditions. I've always said that an accommodation could have been reached that would maintain a longstanding and generally appreciated tradition and also significantly increase opportunities and outcomes for Native Americans. Unfortunately, as is frequently the case, the relative disgruntled few strong armed the issue to a point where that opportunity was lost.

Hmmm...like the relatively disgruntled few pretending a symbol previously deemed offensive won't be considered offensive now? When y'all realize that most people don't care and would be happy to not keep having this conversation derail threads, perhaps we can stop having it.

Thanks, again.
Given the nature of the discussions on: NIL abuse, too much money in football, SEC ain't so hot when everybody is getting paid, and coaches making job choices in part by strength of NIL funds-availability, etc., I'm feeling a little jaded by the explanation above. It could be construed as a bunch of students and alumni trying to pay off a tribe with a licensing deal that offers a cut of logo merch, and other opportunities.

But there's absolutely new and improved 'traditions' can't begin. There's no reason anyone putting energy into lamenting the loss of an offensive symbol could use that energy to build new traditions that everyone can celebrate without reserve. But faking an analog to the Seminole legitimacy at FSU isn't the answer.

Who owns the rights to Kingfisher, just out of curiosity?
