I re-watched the no call on the tie up and then the time-out.
There was a ref looking right down at the players on the floor. He did not signal the time-out, you can barely see on the screen's upper right corner but the ref across the court in front of MSU bench gives the time-out. Ref looking down signals a time-out was called by ref standing by the bench by pointing to him.
also, the whistle sounds before the ref next to the play has raised his hand.
Spero Dedes: "Oh my, they gave MSU a time-out".
T called seconds later. Huge call since we had possession arrow. Time on the clock was 3:18 and we were down 4.
also re-watched KJ's 4th foul. Ref who called it was in a bad position on the baseline and assumed (incorrectly) that KJ pulled him down.

In no particular order, I was frustrated with the following:
1) The tech on Brad late in a tight game.
2) We stopped driving to the basket in the second half even when we were in the bonus early.
3) Almost all of our contested finishes in the paint could have been called as and-ones, and they weren't. You could clearly see on replays that our players were constantly getting hacked near the basket with no-calls.
4) KJ got baited into more than one foul. He needs to be smarter than that.
5) Tre and Ben essentially no-showed when our team needed them.
It's hard to win on the road. Would have loved to get this one, but it is what it is. Regroup for the next game.

This is what I see. In spite or the inequity in the foul calls, there were a plethora of Illini failures that led to a 2 pt. loss. No extra blame on anyone, but Sparty showed much more patience at the rim than the Illini which is their game. Not that that point is surprising. Mostly it was the three newbies (with a 4th (JK) on the bench) who need to become more patient when needed, and quick when quickness is needed. That takes time to build. But otherwise, when assessing the Illini play, it was pretty avg. execution by a talented team. It is my fondest hope that finishing with eyes open will become more prevalent.

Jakucionis played under 10 minutes, fouled out, and scored only 3 points and never really got into the flow of the game
Riley got hot, but was taken out of his rhythm by foul trouble
Illinois missed 19 threes, hitting only 5, and missed their last 10
Ben had 5 points in the first minute and a half, but didn't have another field goal, finished with 6
Illinois missed 10 free throws, including 2 of 3 by White who is an 88 percent FT shooter on the year
White did not score from the floor and only managed 3 total points (Giving Illinois 12 combined points from 3 of their starters)
The two starters who did score in double figures, 13 each, were a combined 11 of 26 shooting
With under 4 minutes left and in a close game, the Illinois bench was given a technical foul for having an assistant off the bench on a play where (according to Underwood in the post-game presser) MSU also had an assistant off the bench. MSU was also given a timeout on that play on what very easily could have been called a jump ball

Outside of the last foul on KJ, which was a huge mistake on his part, the other four he was not really "baited into". A couple of those were simply bad whistles.
It was two-hours worth so yeah, it took some endurance. It's probably exhausting to climb up on a high horse as well
Still feeling overall positive. Maybe even conference title. Still inexperienced but growing.
The silver bullet against us is that BU isn't much for in game adjustments. Really makes long tourney runs tough.

Clark Kellogg, who is a good announcer and knowledgeable, would not shut his pie hole long enough for game details to be conveyed. Another reason why I think CBS is totally unwilling to call out bad officiating.
"Just keep talking about a coach or player and ignore questionable officiating. It's a rule at CBS."
The word has been put out by the league. Illini will not be allowed to win it this year and will not be considered the league darling. Oh well, maybe next year. But probably not.
I don't know about the rest of it, but chasing these games on MSU, the hopes of a regular season championship is over. The focus now is to pay great ball, get the byes in the Big Ten Tournament and hopefully get a top 3 seed in the NCAA's. My fear is that we're pigeon holed into a 4 or 5 seed and it's not because of today's game. Can't lose to NW or USC. Those were far more damaging.

Of course. They got the message from up top from Big Ten not to say bad things to their precious officiating crew. At least a lot of folks out there that have no horse in the race between us and Michigan State are saying how much of a crap show the zebras were.
