ND with a terrible call to kick a field goal from OSU's 8 when they need 16 points in under ten minutes and the kicker shanked it. Deserving.
I don't really get kicking it there. Even if they make it, it's still a 2 TD game.

Does it? If they'd made it it would still be a 1 TD game. If they'd gone for it on 4th down and scored it could be tied right now.
Poor play calling by Ryan Day and co there. ND are completely selling out to stop the run. You've got to play pass there.

yes it does HUGE difference between 8 point game and a 5 point one.
Bigger difference between a 13 point game and an 8 point game, and you're seeing why right now. With 9 minutes left there is no guarantee you can even get 2 more possessions.

They just mentioned it on the broadcast. Ohio State won the very first CFP and just won the very first expanded CFP. Glad ND lost and a B1G team won.

Of course, and in the context of this game, and also the context of ND as a team, the call doesn't make sense. ND is not a team that typically puts points on the board quickly. They like to run the ball. And they'd had a lot of issues putting together drives up to that point in this game.You need 2 TDs no matter what. For this team, the odds of scoring in one play from the opponents 8 are way better than the odds of marching down the field and scoring a TD in a time crunch situation.
They also have missed a lot of field goals this season, so even at chip shot like that was not a given.
And oh by the way, opening weekend this fall includes Texas at Ohio State.

Against exclusively Big 10 and SEC teams too, plus 3-0 vs Big 10 and SEC schools in the regular season.

On one hand, ND is slow with the ball on offense and realistically needed as many points as possible as quickly as possible. And their kicking game has been bad (though better lately, and that was a chip shot).
On the other hand, they were one last defensive stop/play away from getting the ball back with a chance to win (had the FG been made).
In the end, as Linkin Park would like for us to remember, it doesn't even matter.
