Just heard Mr Baseball Bob Uecker has died at 90.
I was busy all day yesterday, got home late, went straight to bed, and woke up this morning to this news.

The world is a less joyful place today. I lived in Wisconsin for two years, and Brewers games were required listening during the nights when I was either sitting on the patio outside of my apartment or driving around. We all know about the comedy and storytelling, but he was also a great radio play by play guy.

90 years is a heck of a run, but he's one of the few that I wish could have lived forever. The term "national treasure" is overused, but he was one.

I did the same listening to Jack Buck. West coast trips I had the transistor radio under the pillow with that single earpiece.
Me too. The radio was dead in the morning if Mom didn't come in a turn it off. I went through a lot of batteries.

Cardinals land 3 players in Baseball America's Top 100 Prospects rankings for 2025......................

JJ Wetherholt # 25
Quinn Mathews # 41
Tink Hence # 68

Hence has electric stuff when healthy, problem is he just can't stay healthy. Maybe a move to the BP might be in his future.

We can't keep moving our best pitching prospects to the BP.
Point taken, but is he really a rotation prospect? If he lacks 180 inning durability then perhaps his best spot is in the pen. 2025 will help sorting that out. If he has more issues again this year then I think the move will have to be made.

In today's game very few are getting to 180 innings. 21 total pitchers in the MLB did it in 2024. That's fewer than 1 per team. The Dodgers didn't have a single pitcher pitch more than 140, and only had two pitch more than 90. 100 innings of good a good starting pitcher is worth a heck of a lot more than 50 innings of a good reliever. What good teams do is have more good starting pitchers to throw out there, not fewer.

Great news...............Jimmy ballgame is out as a FanDual broadcaster this year.................

I have made it pretty clear that Jim Edmonds was not great but in my view, he is better than the alternative from the last few years, Brad Thompson.

Hate him or love, Jimmy went off on ESPN 101 about the state of our Cardinals and from the smoke I've seen, he is telling truths. I like Jimmy, I always felt I could learn a thing or something extra to chew on each broadcast. Crazy the org doesn't want him or some other players from the past around the active fellas. Apparently Nolan asked for McGwire to come during spring training to help with his swing he was denied.

I like Brad, but the golly gee wilikers type approach gets old.

I heard the interview too...quite eye opening. It was close to 45 minutes long, but if you are interested.

Check out Cardinal Hall of Famer Jim Edmonds on the 101 ESPN app

I like him as an announcer. He picked up on things players were doing that were bad habits. I always wondered if he talked to any of the active players about what he observed.

Pretty dumb about not wanting McGwire to come help him. Seems like they’ve done a great job of screwing up Walker and Gorman.

Pretty obvious they are clearing the deck for Chaim Bloom, giving him as much room as they can when he assumes control.
I know but you would think they would sign a mid level reliever for a year or two at some kind of minium. Clearly they have decided not to even try in 25. Sounds like a montra. We have moved from "The Cardinals Way" to "We ain't gonna try in 2025".

I think if anything they're going to shed more payroll. I expect them to be bottom third in the league by opening day (all it would take at this point is shedding Arenado's contract).

My biggest concern is that we're never going to see payroll go back up to top third of the league (top 10) levels. I think the goal is to inhabit the middle of the league and be competitive occasionally, not annually. And when I say competitive, more "make the playoffs, see what happens" than "do whatever it takes to win a WS." Essentially, the Cardinals will be run like a truly small market team. Hopefully a well-run small market team. But a small market team, nonetheless. This seems to be the BDW vision.

I get that Chaim Bloom is a very smart guy, who did a great job with the Rays. The DeWitts really seem to want this organization to mimic those Rays. Just go ahead and look up the results of the Rays from the years 2005-2019 (the years Bloom was there) and then compare them to the results of the Cardinals in the same years. Is there a Cardinals fan alive who would trade away our results for the Rays' results? The only thing that makes the Rays' accomplishments seem impressive is that they had a very limited payroll to work with. I think that's the part that is most appealing to ownership.

Bloom will have more resources in Stl than he had in TB. No one here knows how much more but there will be more jingle available.
