The sentiment around our team is different on here is different than how it’ll be viewed nationally. On paper, we lost to a good Nebraska team without our second best player. This isn’t saying we’re deserving of being ranked, but it’ll happen if we beat tOSU. A lot of teams are choking, it’s not just us. It’ll be an interesting March.

I think this is accurate. To voters, it was a conf road loss that went to overtime. If you didn't watch the game you wouldn't know actually how bad we looked.

Apologize for the typos, Notre Dame and Iowa State ruined my parlays and I’m a few drinks in. But all is good, let’s get a win tomorrow! I’ve watched a lot of games the past two days and everyone seems to suck more than usual.

This is the NIL era after all. Last season only had 2 dominant teams, UConn and the Puds. They both made the championship...

Did he give the guy a shot in the nuts? If that's the call it's far from the worst. Seemed really odd to have his leg swing like that.
I watched it multiple times, and I saw a coming together. Sure didn’t see anything flagrant. It looked a lot like a really unfortunate accident.

Well, if it's a kick in the nuts intentionally it's a flagrant. Could have been unintentional but that leg swing doesn't look natural to me.

Hardly the worst call in my opinion.

he was in the air making a long pass. It's not uncommon to kick your leg to help get momentum. Looks like he might have kicked a little extra on purpose. I certainly wouldn't have kicked him out of the game for it.
Flagrant 1 and keep it moving. You don't want players thinking they can get a groin shot in as an accident, but calling it a flagrant 2 feels excessive

Toppin is a lefty who was double-teamed and was well off-balance as he was spinning to make a pass to his right. He just made an awkward move to maintain his balance as two Houston defenders were right up in his space.

A flagrant 1 would have been harsh, but I guess you can defend it as a way to keep the peace. I agree that you don’t want to condone groin shots, but you could also say that the Houston defender didn’t give him any space to make a normal movement given his position. But a flagrant 2 was a terrible call.

Hmm, I can see how that's incidental. Kicking your legs when you jump is pretty normal to keep balanced.

I don't like how Toppin reacted afterwards. It makes it seen intentional. Unless you are a sociopath, you feel bad when you kick some other guy in the nuts. Also, you absolutely know it happened when it happens.

I've never officiated basketball, but I've officiated soccer. Soccer has something similar with cautions (yellow cards) and send offs/ejections (red cards). From my experience, you know when you see a send off offense. It just feels and looks different compared to a yellow card offense. In a lot of cases, you can sense that the offense is going to happen. The times I've given a straight red card in a game (soccer's equivalent of a flagrant 2), I've almost been running to the play thinking "uh-oh, something bad's going to happen here."

I didn't get that feeling at all on this play, primarily because of what I've said about the Houston defenders and Toppin being a lefty. The reaction is something I'm genuinely not sure about. Toppin was double teamed on the sideline and obviously in trouble. He's clearly starting to panic looking for a teammate. Sometimes, you don't really know what's going on in a situation like that. I took the reaction after he was told he was ejected more as, "Wait, what did I just do for that to happen?" If a player genuinely did something with intent on a play like that, Toppin would have walked off in a manner saying, "Yeah, I tried to sneak one in and was caught." His reaction looked to me like, "Wait - what did I do, and exactly why am I being ejected?" I'd also say that if he was concerned about being ejected, he would have spent the timeout looking at the table to where the review was taking place. I just never saw that here. Toppin was focused on his team. I don't think college kids have that ability to just act like nothing happened to get away with it in the course of a game.

I was replied to in the Athletic's comment thread that contact with the groin has to be a flagrant 2 if it's considered anything more than a common foul. To be honest, I haven't referenced the NCAA rule book yet to see if that's factual.

That really puts the officials in a tough spot, because this play just isn't worthy of a flagrant 2. But, if you think it's anything more than a normal basketball play, you have to go flagrant 2. That's a bad rule if this is actually the case, because there's just no way I can objectively see this as a flagrant 2. F2s require intent and/or excessive force. I don't see either here.

Found the 2023-24 NCAA rule book which does provide language about contact with the groin being a flagrant 2. In my opinion, this is an awful rule. It basically assumes guilt unless proven innocent because the penalty is a flagrant 2 unless the action is "clearly accidental" (subset d) below).

I personally still contend the action was accidental, and likely "clearly accidental". But if the officials did not deem it as "clearly accidental", then they are bound by rule to assess a flagrant 2. Again, it's a terrible rule. Officials need discretion to rule a play like this a flagrant 1.

Yeah, under the rule I can see why it was called the way it was, the refs didn't really have a choice except to kind of ignore the rule and claim it was clearly accidental (proving a negative is pretty hard). The natural consequence of everyone constantly railing against refs is that the NCAA takes away discretion in the name of "consistency," and you see rules like this. Even so, you should have to demonstrate intent to toss a player, not have to demonstrate lack of intent to keep a player in the game.

So 9 of the favorites of the 16 top 25 AP lost yesterday, if my Sunday morning glasses are serving me right. 5 of those to unranked teams.
I have said ad nauseam, this high roster turnover portal era has led to a worse product on the court. Someone mentioned last year, there were only 2 great teams, UConn and Purdue. I agree with UConn, not Purdue. Purdue was a one man team, and when they ran up against the one team that could mitigate him, they also got whipped.

So on one hand, you could say parity is at a high which makes things more fun. However, with the product being weaker, I wouldn't make that argument. My hope is that teams will realize, roster turnover is NOT good for their programs.

This NIL system is really incredibly stupid on all fronts. Players get paid, but not by their "employer." That alone brings in undue influence, as it seems we might be seeing. The players apparently don't have to comply with the contracts to get paid. There is nothing but 1 year deals. There is no ability to cut a player and end the contract. So someone like AJ Storr is just stealing money.

If players want to be pros, then contracts have to be a part of the equation. I would never do anything less than a 2 year contract. I would also make my contracts incentive based. If everyone moved this direction, those paying for these contracts get some protection, teams will improve, and we will get a better product on the court. I'm a little tired of watching two top 10 teams play and seeing sloppy play and poor shooting.

Just finished watching the replay of the msu vs. usc game on peecock............wow , the last 2 minutes of game time seemed like 30 minutes of real time.......I wish we could reduce the amount of B$G games of low kicking ref named Jeff......Seriously not a highly competent official and really really does fall within the d j bald head ref realm of ineptness.........

It was refreshing of not having to suffer through the sickening zero-izzo camera fandom that usually happens in an msu game..........msu was shown to have as many warts as the other contender's for the B$G regular season title.......

usc is a team that is rising in my mind.........Claude is hard to match up with , but not the only option they have....they pass the ball well and usually end up with an open shot...........msu is like us to an extent that if their shots are falling then they have a great chance of a victory............that's what makes the nebby loss hurt so much................

Here's hoping we have our shooting eyes on today against osu.....................

While I am not a fan of Danny Hurley, the offense UCONN ran last night in an intense road victory over No. 9 Marquette was sweet. We need to transition over the off-season to something more like that.

I’m telling ya…we should poach Luke Murray from Dan Hurley… The perfect solution…He’s supposedly the brains behind UCONN’s more interesting stuff.

Man it seem like Illini men's basketball seems to try to sell a story like the WWE, with the same story - start out like world beaters - lose a key piece ( the crazier reason the better)- comeback just in time to make a run. Great story for ratings

Curbelo out - concussion
Shannon - false legal problems
KJ & Ivisic - mystery hurt arm & mono

I really don't think it is scripted, but I'm ready to comeback in time to make a run.
