From ESPN:

It's not hard to see that they are not a team that should be attempting more than 10 3's a game. Yet here we are.

It's crazy to me that I have read almost 20 pages of post game thread and this is the first comment I've seen that really placed focus on how poor the outside shooting has been. This team was right around 35-36% from 3 the first 15 games of the season.

The last 9 games, we have only played ONE ranked team. So it isnt as if the competition/schedule just got harder. In fact, quite the opposite.

I think we've shot 22% from 3 as a team over those 9 games. I would be worried if we were hovering around 30% let alone 22%.

Again, we shot 35% or so the first 15 games which includes 33% vs Alabama, 49% vs Arkansas, at least hit over 30% vs Wisconsin and Missouri, then 55% vs Oregon so it isnt as if we put up that number against all of the cupcakes.

I do see some rushed 3s and a few bad 3s here and there, but nothing that would explain 22%.

It's bizarre.

But it’s a team that was recruited to run an offense that relied heavily on the 3 pt shot.

Quite the conundrum.

The Illini are like DOGE, BU is Musk and the assistant coaches are the DOGE kids. The Illini are actually WINNING, you just need to disregard the fake news.

I know this thread is full negative, but Rutgers has been on the verge of a big win. They almost got Sparty and Michigan w/o Dylan Harper. It’s a talented team.

That said we should win that game. Really have to go 3-1 over the next 4 to feel better about March.

Also with all that said, stop listening to Indy Illini Fan about anything. He’s in every lose thread talking about anything negative with the program. Clearly Brad has rubbed him the wrong way at some point bc it feels personal. Never shows up in the win threads, always posting a storm in the lose. Stop taking his words seriously.
Josh Whitman doesn't like to lose

I have a feeling that our Freshman read the comments about themselves online. If you do that, you lose focus, and things go downhill.

We are who we thought we were to begin the season, a very young rebuild. Young players will have flashes of brilliance, but also have flashes of complete chaos.

We are either going to go out the 1st round of the NCAA tourney, or win the whole darn thing. There is no in-between for this group. Either way, we are all here for the bumpy ride.....

For everyone commenting about KJ left arm hurting when shooting, I have my doubts. The left arm has very little to do with shooting. The shooting doctor says 98% of the shot comes from the dominant hand.

It's mental....all mental

Illinois basketball has sadly gone from must see tv to do something else and record the game. Watch later and skip through commercials and bad play. Entire bad game watched in 15 minutes. KJ is no lottery pick, really wonder about coaching 🤔 or lack of. Will we smoke Minnesota? Or come out flat allowing them to gain confidence? Court storming warning issued!!!
I have not gotten there yet: that is recording and watching later like I did during the Groce regime. I am just another longtime fan, and I have no real incite into the team dynamics. But to my untrained eyeballs there seems to be some issues that need to be addressed at seasons end.

I'm not so sure what the Illini are experiencing is all that much different than what Calipari's freshman-filled Kentucky teams went through many years and why lottery-pick loaded Duke teams haven't reached the Final Four in 10 years. I'm grudgingly coming to the conclusion that freshman-led teams are prone to the roller-coaster rides. I'll take some Dramamine and hope that KJ returns to form, Will and Morez maintain what have been doing as of late, the good Kylan keeps showing up and Tomi gets healthy. The inconsistency probably rules out any winning streaks, but I do think they can beat anyone on a given night. It keeps me invested despite the turbulence.

For me, the biggest point of frustration lies in the games lost where we have no real business losing. This season, we've had at least five of these.

Northwestern
Rutgers
USC
Maryland
Nebraska

While I obviously don't like losing, games like these are at least somewhat expected.

Alabama - Final Four-caliber team in a virtual road game
Michigan State - Always tough at home, and they got a lot of calls they usually get at home
Tennessee - #1 team at the time. I know we had every chance to win that game and probably should have won, but it's still the #1 team

Those first five games are what really frustrates me about this team. Win all or even four of them like we should have won, and things look so much different. You just cannot lose that type of games so many times in a season. Sure, everyone has a "crap the bed" game a time or maybe two each season. But five times in a season is not acceptable.

These team dynamics definitely need some inciting, that's for sure. A little bit of old Brad perhaps.

I would take Maryland off that list. They are a quality team. Honestly, I would put the Tennessee game up there. Up 8 (?) late at home and blowing it?

I have started going to bed at half time. I watched the second half this morning, with a lot of fast forwarding.

This is a talented team that has had bad luck with availability and is overall YOUNG. Riding those young ups and downs

Also I refuse to believe that KJ is healthy because he has not been the same player. He was driving left a lot and that's been nonexistent since he came back.
At the beginning of the game he looked like he was in a fog. Two quick turnovers. He bounced a free throw off the front of the rim. Something is not right.

The hell of it don't. When Illinois wins the coaches take all the glory and when they lose it's the players fault.

Cameras panned to Tyler speaking to Brad. Tyler looked to be talking X’s and O’s and Brad clearly said, “WHY?!”…I may be making mountain out of a mole hill, but it just seems like there’s something amiss.

anyone got a clip? I was at the game...unfortunately

You're right ... I don't think Brad would do any better ... Brad is more CEO than X&O ...

I want two ELITE X&O coaches ... One on offense and one on defense ... We can afford it ... Now go find them ... I don't care where they come from ...

Prefer Stephen Gentry & Luke Yaklich but I am not opposed to others ...
I am by no means at the point of Brad being on the hot seat or anything. But if he is supposed to be more of a CEO coach, and he stands by Tyler and Hamer after this year, then we may need to start questioning his ceiling as a CEO type of coach.

I see your point, but I tend to look at these games from the viewpoint of "Going into the game, how would I feel if we lost this game?"

Losing to Maryland at home is not acceptable. That is a team you have to beat at home (on the road is probably in the Michigan State category). I know we were up 8 against Tennessee, but coming into that game we knew they were ranked #1.

Overall, I think you and I are in a similar number of games that have been frustrating. Just a slightly different viewpoint of specific games.
