My friend If I was a Kansas fan I would say of course they shouldn’t fire Bill Self, but this is a straw man argument. Brad Underwood on his best coaching day could never be Bill Self . Bill Self record in 3 seasons at Illinois is better than Brad Underwood’s 8 seasons at Illinois . Bill Self record at Kansas he has 8 elite 8 , 2 National Championships ,10 sweet 16s and 4 final fours . Bill Self is entitled to a bad season. Brad Underwood is NOT
I know you think you're really smart with some of your posts here the last couple days but here, let me try to break it down for you...

You're claiming incessantly that Brad is a failure of a coach/can never lead us to the promised land here at Illinois because he's having a down season. You've repeatedly made the point that you're absolutely sure that he's not the right guy for the job because supposedly in the NIL era, if you're a good coach you should never have down years because you can just buy good players year over year.

Thus I used Bill Self as an example to show that in fact.... you can have arguably the best coach in the game, for a blueblood program at that, and STILL have down years even with a massive NIL warchest. And btw, you're telling on yourself by trying to compare Self's 3 years to Brad's eight....programs were in completely different places when they each took over. You forgetting that Self's best team he ever had here were all Lon's players too right?

I'm not down on Brad because he's had a bad year (relatively, should still be a top 8 seed lol) that supposedly means he'll never be elite here. I'm down on him because he's responsible for us having arguably the worst coaching staff on our bench of a program at our level, which he absolutely needs to fix this offseason.

It's news to me that no one has developed under Brad.
Don’t you understand? TSJ was a generational talent who came ready to play and was an All-American since birth. Ayo was a one-and-done who just happen to stay three years because he felt sorry for Brad and Kofi was all-NBA until Brad got ahold of him and dragged him down. We raised all three of their banners before they even arrived. Thanks for nothing, Brad!

If Josh Whitman was the athletic director instead of inept Ron Guenther Bill Self would have never gotten away . If Bill Self would have stayed at Illinois and not gone to Kansas I guarantee you Illinois would have at least one National Championship by now . Bruce Weber, Groce and Underwood ain’t it . We have NIL and state of the art basketball facilities now all we need is the right coach. Bill Self 3 years at Illinois record is still better than Underwood’s 8 seasons
1st, Self was never staying even if Guenther matched the offer or bumped it up. Kansas was his dream job, Illinois was a means to get there. 2nd, I'm guessing Self was playing the NIL game here when many others weren't ;)

His only good class was bringing in Hill and Nunn. Plus Rice transferred in but I think Rice is the most overrated Illini in my lifetime. Then he did get Frazier to commit but that's it.

3 good high school recruits in 5 years and the lack of talent on the roster was pretty apparent when Brad took over. Also, he had numerous issues with players getting in trouble.
He also got Leron Black and JCL

Wow, this Hackman and his wife situation is looking pretty bizarre right now.... I didn't realize they both had passed. Mummificaton? Yikes! @Dan I supposed this needs moved, sorry... Just an interesting turn in this story.

I know both guys were decently highly ranked recruits but I don't think either were good college basketball players.

Black put up some empty stats on a bad team his 4 year while Coleman-Lands was in college for 7 years was terrible at Illinois and only played on bad DePaul teams and a horrendous Iowa State team.

To put Coleman-Lands college career in perspective. He started playing for Illinois while I was a junior and was a benchwarmer on Kansas the year I finished my PhD.

Reading all (most) of these posts I think one point the BU defenders on this thread are missing is that BU and his staff have the same faults they did at the beginning of his tenure; conflicts between scheme and personnel, sluggish or absent in-game adjustments, nonsensical rotations, and can’t in bound the ball in critical situations.

Yes, he’s won a lot of games. Yes, he’s only made the 2nd weekend twice in his 40 year career. Yes, he’s recruited great players and staff. Yes, he’s had abnormal turnover.

Forget all that, he’s still bad at the same things he was bad at when he was first hired. This, I think, is why some people are ready to move on. The nepotism just makes it that much worse even if Tyler isn’t the problem.
