Why does Sean McVay have an OC? It’s just about different ideas, different ways to do the same thing. Everyone has a different view on how they see things. More than one way to skin a cat….All these coaches know ball…it’s just hey maybe we try it this way, or I saw so and so run this action a certain way. The young guys have been around a lot of new age basketball and have a different view on things and the way actions can be run.
I don't think it's a bad thing at all to have younger coaches on staff. I also don't think it's a bad thing to have coaches who are well-versed on analytics. My issue has always been (and continues to be) the apparent overreliance on analytics at the expense of making the team as good as it can be.

If you have a team shooting 35% from 3, I'm all good with shooting a lot of 3s. That's equivalent to shooting 53% from 2. But when you're shooting 30% and under from 3, that's like shooting 45% or less from 2. When we've seen the team have success going against the analytics, sometimes you have to realize blindly following the analytics is hurting the team. As I've said before a few times, I'm a finance guy who lives in data and analysis. However, I also know when to go against the analytics.

Groce's best team by far was the one he inherited from Weber with Paul, Richardson, and Egwu(nearly got to a sweet 16 with that team).

I dont think he was necessarily a great tactical coach either but he didn't really bring in that many strong players.

His only good class was bringing in Hill and Nunn. Plus Rice transferred in but I think Rice is the most overrated Illini in my lifetime. Then he did get Frazier to commit but that's it.

3 good high school recruits in 5 years and the lack of talent on the roster was pretty apparent when Brad took over. Also, he had numerous issues with players getting in trouble.
Groce's problem was he could not land a PG to save his life. In fact, Groce's biggest failure led directly to Underwood's success.

Remember Groce was VERY early in identifying Jawun Evans, but then he thought he could get Jalen Brunson. He basically sacrificed Evans in the pursuit of Brunson and ended up with neither. Without Evans, Underwood probably doesn't have the horses needed to have a strong season in year 1 at Ok State and get the Illinois job.

It's been 9 years since Groce left Illinois, I wonder if he will ever get another major coaching job?
He's done amazing at Akron about to get his 5th 20 win season (not counting covid year) in a row 11-0 in confrerence right now and could make his 3rd ncaa tourney in 4 years/ He's 77-26 in the MAC in his last 6 seasons and he's only 53.

If Illinois St moved on I think he'd fit well there

He had the best season of his tenure there last year, and is very likely about to get them to the tourney their second year in a row. If they didn't fire him after missing the tourney his first four years, why would they do it now?

They are going to make the tourney? Man the bubble must be weak this year

103 of 105 brackets have them in right now. They should win at least 2 of their last 3. KenPom:47 NET:54 2 more regular season wins and a conference tourney win or 2 and they are for sure in....so no I don't see a world where they fire Fred.
Hoiberg is a VERY good coach. Seems like recruiting has been a challenge at NE, but they run some fantastic offensive sets.

I don't think Groce will get another power conference role, and I'm not sure I'd move on from Akron to Illinois State if I were him. He has a good thing going at Akron, and that level seems to really fit him well. I like Groce, and I want to see him successful. I've also watched Akron a couple of times this season on CBS Sports Network. He has them really playing well. I think it would be a big risk career-wise to move to another mid-major (even if the Valley would be something of a step up from the MAC).

You can see the trajectory things have taken at Nebraska under him, and it's taken some time, but it appears to finally be paying off (starting last season). Definitely more of a slow burn than this success at Iowa St., and maybe he's just not that guy anymore (and maybe Nebraska will never be that kind of program), but if he can sustainably keep Nebraska at the middle of the pack in the Big Ten and make the tournament like 50% of the time, that's a significant improvement from where the program had been in the 20+ years before he got there.

I’d be happy making the 2nd weekend more than once in 8 years …
How bad does that start to effect recruiting if we are known as a place that underachieves and that Brad can't develop anyone. I imagine at first its cost more NIL money but at some point you can't buy your way out of that I would think.

Next big thing coaching wise is Alan Huss. He should be getting hired at a high major this year. Can coach and a very good recruiter
Had to google this to be sure, but I remember watching him play some for Creighton in the tourney when his dad worked in my office. Was born in Decatur, according to Wiki.
