I tell you what ... IU could do a LOT worse than Mark Byington ... That dude is impressive ...

The last JMU guy worked out pretty well for them ...
If it wasn’t for Rick Pitino’s work at St.John’s, Byington might be getting some whispers about Coach of the Year. What he’s done to rebuild Vandy after Stackhouse pile drove that program is remarkable.

Talk about getting the most bang for your buck in the portal as well ... He really found some diamonds in the rough and developed them ...

His SLOB, OOB, and OOTO stuff is ELITE ... His assistants are also very active drawing things up in the huddle ...

Next big thing coaching wise is Alan Huss. He should be getting hired at a high major this year. Can coach and a very good recruiter

Since Coach Underwood has been a large part of this thread the last few weeks due to complete misinformation that his seat is warm, I think this would be a good place to congratulate BU after the Iowa win. With last night's win, Illinois is the only Big Ten program to have 6 consecutive .500 or above BT records over the last 6 seasons.

Man, I just don't think that it being the NIL era means that any coach should be fired if they have a down year since apparently it should be so easy to restock with talent and have them gel. Lots of really great coaches who have had seasons falling on their faces, even with NIL.

Do you think Kansas should fire Bill Self because they're having a relatively down season even with (maybe even due to) NIL?
My friend If I was a Kansas fan I would say of course they shouldn’t fire Bill Self, but this is a straw man argument. Brad Underwood on his best coaching day could never be Bill Self . Bill Self record in 3 seasons at Illinois is better than Brad Underwood’s 8 seasons at Illinois . Bill Self record at Kansas he has 8 elite 8 , 2 National Championships ,10 sweet 16s and 4 final fours . Bill Self is entitled to a bad season. Brad Underwood is NOT

To describe a system where richer schools dominate poorer ones by sheer force of spending money as "even" is pretty incredible, but I take your point.

I agree that the NIL world seems to advantage Illinois, particularly on the basketball side, though everything is so new and moving so fast that I retain a healthy degree of uncertainty about where it will all shake out and I take insider claims of our financial superiority with ten boulders of salt.

But then I also firmly agree that old world or new, Illini fans should have high expectations.

I'm as upset about the soft, weak basketball we've played the last month plus as anybody, but when we're coming off of a period in which we had the best record in the Big Ten over a five year period with two (legitimate) Big Ten titles, two BTT titles, and an Elite Eight just last year, I think freaking out over two bad months is pretty ridiculous ESPECIALLY with the added weapon of NIL to buy our way out of problems.

There's just a lot of people looking to take issue with BU, either because of a distaste for him personally (which honestly I somewhat understand, he's kind of a jerk, I wouldn't play for him, but results are results), or because of irrational, illogical overweighting of random tournament results heightened to a fever pitch by our Loyola trauma.

Those things are understandable, but they are also unwise, IMO.
If Josh Whitman was the athletic director instead of inept Ron Guenther Bill Self would have never gotten away . If Bill Self would have stayed at Illinois and not gone to Kansas I guarantee you Illinois would have at least one National Championship by now . Bruce Weber, Groce and Underwood ain’t it . We have NIL and state of the art basketball facilities now all we need is the right coach. Bill Self 3 years at Illinois record is still better than Underwood’s 8 seasons

The last part of this is so good. Slick Rick is flipping an amazing coach despite any moral shortcomings he may have had before NIL or currently (no idea). Guy can coach and WIN.

If we had lost to Iowa it would make sense to have more coaching change e. But there’s nothing to it right now, the season has to play out

Of course Tyler Underwood won't be fired. He shouldn't be fired.

Hiring a more experienced coach to have the primary responsiblity for the offense (which could well be Brad Underwood's) is what should, and likely will, happen.

I imagine Tyler will remain on staff, with a reassigned role. I also think he'd be best served working under someone other than his dad, someone like Bill Self. I mention Self only because he and Underwood seem close, the mentoring would be first-rate, and the job is outside the B1G so there wouldn't be much chance of conflict of interest.
