Today, per Pomeroy, we are ranked #18 in the country. Mich. State is 9, Wisconsin 10, Maryland 12. Purdue is #14. FWIW, Kansas is no. 22, Duke is still number 1. Michigan is #28, UConn #36, and UNC 38.

Certainly. But being drunk does make it more likely that someone will make stupid decisions like that.
Absolutely not. If being drunk increases the likelihood of someone acting racist, then alcohol isn't the problem—their racism is.

Just embarrassing for our program and our fan base.

Basically, if you are racist, being drunk makes it more likely you'll say it publicly. Doesn't add anything to your personality that wasn't already there underneath the surface.
Right, I'm not defending anything they did or saying alcohol makes it excusable.

Alcohol does make it more likely, though, and Event Staff should have been prepared for the higher likelihood knowing it was Unofficial. For example, by having more staff in that area between students and visiting fans.

^^^^^ This. Have seen it in several contexts over many years in different parts of the world.

The sage Latin aphorism, "In vino veritas" exists for a reason. Akin to taking a prospective business partner golfing if you want a first-order indication of character.

Will Riley.. he has these jab fakes, and head fakes, and his cross over covers so much ground. The way he changes direction and get the defender moving is so impressive.

TSJ had that quick crossover in transition where he’s change directions on the spot and get the defender turned, but it all happened “in a phone booth”, but Will gets them moving 5-10 feet each way and he’s gotten good at just crossing and going the other way when he senses the help defender or getting rid of the ball. It’s been good. 👏
Will is a NBA material. However he is a jump shot player instead of like TSJ forcing scores on opponents. I pray his jump shot works in the turney.

Why do some of you seem to think I am somehow defending them? I've repeatedly said I'm not. But it should be uncontroversial to state the fact that alcohol lowers inhibitions, making it more likely that problems like this will arise.

I didn’t mean my post to come off as accusing you of excusing it. It was more of a general statement cause I’m sure that would be the excuse of whoever made the racist statements

You just don't get it.

You keep bringing up alcohol. This has nothing to do with alcohol. There is no intrinsic correlation between "lowerred inhibition" and "being racist". "Lowered inhibition" could mean texting that ex you shouldn't contact, eating that junk food you shouldn't eat, smoking that cigarette that you already quit long time ago, busting out that dance move on the dance floor that's embarrassing but you don't care...Explain to me why you think there is a path from lowered inhibitions to yelling racist abuses

Nice way for The Beloved to respond when Purdue threatened to seize the game. In the end, Purdoo... Pur-didn’t.

Once again, Riley proved to be the heart and soul of the team. Lots of guys contributed. But he was the catalyst once again.

Illini didn’t fold when the Threes were not raining down with regularity in the first half. It’s not always easy to win when you build your team around shooting the Three and then you only shoot around 30% for the season.

Illini allowed way too many layups and easy trips down the lane. Need to clean that up before the fun begins.

Jason Benetti gave a nice and fair call of the game on Fox being an Illinois-born guy. The crowd was loud and energized and that came through on the screen. And once again The Beloved gave a good and exciting accounting of themselves before a Friday night National TV audience.

This remains a fun and sometimes frustrating group of Illini to watch. There is much talent but there also remains too many times when they lose it for a while. And as we know... you’ve got to maintain consistency in the Dance since you don’t get any second chances.

I have, at no point, made a connection between alcohol and "being racist." I have made a connection between alcohol and lowered inhibitions, which makes someone more likely to act on impulses. If that person has racist thoughts they would otherwise be inclined to suppress publicly (pretty common), alcohol is going to make them more likely to go ahead and say them out loud.

My core point was based on the following facts that are (I think) unassailable:
1. Yesterday was Unofficial.
2. Large numbers of students consume more alcohol than usual on Unofficial.
3. Alcohol lowers inhibitions/makes people more impulsive.
4. Some people are racist (or think other unsavory/offensive things) but don't want to openly admit that or act it out in public.

My core point is:
It therefore stands to reason that, on Unofficial, there is a higher likelihood that any kind of offensive behavior will occur between students and opposing fans. Since Unofficial is well-publicized, SFC should have know and had extra staff on hand in those areas.

Time out dude.

You don’t know if it has anything to do with alcohol any more than anyone else.

The point he’s making is that the possibility that alcohol was involved MAY make someone more likely to outwardly express something that ordinarily they would not.

Ie: racism, love, hate, jealousy, annoyance….whatever.

That is unassailable concrete science and logic.

Nobody has insinuated alcohol=racism.

After some nice wins this season, including this one, I'm afraid I'm going to be looking back and saying "what if"

Well, I've seen that clear path several times over the years. Seeing someone in a professional context, for example, for several years, and then drinking with him for several hours and hearing unseemly comments, which he'd manage to contain in the context of everyday interactions. It's embodied in the centuries-old adage "In vino veritas" that I noted earlier. I'm unaware of anything controversial about observing the link you dispute. It's why that adage has endured for two millennia, and probably as long as humans have been consuming alcohol.

BTW, the worst of this I encountered when living in and travelling around Europe. America is a paragon of racial understanding compared with nations embracing blood-and-soil notions of citizenship. Come to think of it, I haven't encountered this in the U.S. since the '80s.

I’m not saying the accusations last night toward TKR’s family did happen or didn’t. I would think that in an arena that was largely full throat all night and those family members usually sit with the opposing teams traveling party, more from that group would’ve heard whatever bull!!!! came out, especially if it was directed towards a kid. Again I’m not saying it didn’t happen, but if it didn’t, it doesn’t much matter because it hit sports news and now us Illini fans are lumped into absolute nonsense. I would just think more would hear it and it would be pretty easy to locate the offender so we could cook that person.
I’ll probably get dragged for this, but I like the full story. Very, very unfortunate if true.

I think the issue is unless you have video of it happening, it's hard to pinpoint where it came from. If they do find the students/fans engaging in that behavior, I hope they pull their tickets. Make examples of them so no one else thinks it's a good idea to talk $#!? to a kid.

As an aside, I think Benetti and Raftery called a great game. They are well paired.

Benetti is the best great play-by-play out there and combines nicely with Raftery's good color takes and analysis.
Onions!
Yes.

(Fond memory of Bill "Tariff" Raftery, Sean McDonough and Jay Bilas doing "Paint the Hall Orange" game, 2004 vs. Wake Forest.)
