These awards are a mess across the board. All-defense team is a joke. 1st & 2nd need to be expanded teams with the addition of new teams.

Sparty three games clear of the pack in an 18 team league with zero first or second team all-conference players.

I hate Izzo's guts and really believed he was done, but you can't do anything but tip your cap, absolute beast mode coaching.

Give me the All-Freshman team, and I'll play any team in the country. Of course, they'll have to coach themselves, but I'll sit in the coach's seat for a front-row experience.

Maybe I could watch some Bourbon and Blobs during the game to draw up some plays...

My only real hot take reaction from these lists is that I'd argue there were probably 4 freshmen in the B1G that were better than Derik Queen, so he's not first team All-B1G material and shouldn't have been freshman of the year. Other than that, no real issues.

For all I know Brice Williams could be averaging 40ppg but I have a tough time with a guy making first team all conference when his team doesn't make the conference tournament (yes I know they were tied for 12th and lost a big tiebreaker).

That's certainly a take. He's averaging 15.7 points, 9.2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 1.1 steals per game. Those are insane numbers for any player let alone a freshman.

These awards are just a beauty contest. I usually don’t put a lot of stock in them.

That said, I haven’t watched a lot of Maryland or Penn state. Ace might deserve his flowers for all I know.

Not quite applicable but reminds me of a quote I've heard about Bob Knight, I don't quite remember where I heard it but it went that "he made bad players good and made great players good," highlighting his overall drive to build cohesive teams instead of focusing on individual player development.

Something funny that's always stuck with me.

feels like Andre Dawson MVP in 1987 Cubs finished LAST Where do they finish without Dawson?

They're solid numbers for sure, but Harper averaged 19-5-4, Bailey averaged 18 and 7 with 1.3 blocks and 1 steal per game, KJ averaged 15-6-5, and Jace Richardson was more efficient in less usage as the best player on the best team in the conference. It was an exceptionally good year for B1G freshmen.

Did KB get screwed not being on the All-Defensive team? TWO guys from Oregon???
Individual defense is such a hard thing to evaluate, especially for guards (for bigs you can just kind of go off blocks and rebounds and be in the right ballpark). Even advanced stats are not great. Evan Miya, for example has KB as the 6th best defender on the Illini, #69 best defender in the Big 10, one spot behind BH in both rankings. Now, if you've ever watched an Illinois basketball game, this result is absurd (even though I think BH is a better defender than he gets credit for, though he is inconsistent). A little off topic, but it's this kind of stuff that also makes me doubt the accuracy of any of Miya's algorithms and causes me to shudder whenever I see him quoted or referenced on here.

TLDR: it's best not to put too much stock in any All-Defense team as it remains very hard to judge, individual defensive stats are bad, and therefore voters are forced to vote largely on either bad stats or vibes.
